Show UNIVERSITY Journal PACE EDITOR 5 Dana Bartholomew, Thursday, October 28, 2004 Holiday tradition involves fun, not student drinking Ghouls and goblins will come out Saturday night. Watch your back; you might get a fright. Ghosties, werewolves, Frankenstein, too. Be smart, be they might come after you. quick A trick or a treat; take your pick. You could have both if youre sly and slick. the one time of year when you can completely Halloween look and be accepted, gothics arent looked at your change d is expected weird, and acting like a psychotic, and sometimes praised. Its also the time when college students can come together. Pumpkin carving, telling ghost stories and throwing Halloween parties are just a few of the yearly traditions college students practice. Parties are the most widely practiced among college students. We believe no one is too old to celebrate Halloween. Halloween is not just about candy and scary things that go bump in the night. Its about creating memories with those you love. Halloween should be a day of innocent fun, a time when everyone can revel in autumns colors and beautiful weather. Its not about evil and the dark side anymore than Christmas is about the Pagan rituals it has its roots in. Drinking should not be a tradition practiced on Halloween. People tend to go crazy on this holiday. Being drunk on Halloween is the last thing anyone should consider. Yes, this is a college town and many students are of legal age to drink, but you cant deny the young children in Cedar in and around City (many of whom will be fun. their innocent of college housing) Parents shouldnt have to worry about whether their children are going to run in to a group of college students. Parents should feel secure with their children where students live. Even though there are many smart drinkers, there are always the stupid few who think its okay to drink and drive. The chances of hitting someone on the streets are much greater on Halloween. We commend those students who choose to celebrate the holiday in a sober and safe manner. If students are worried about what parties they should or should not attend because alcohol may be present, they should attend SUUs Howl on Friday. Its a great way to party, have fun and be safe. Ashlee Nelson, SUUSA activities vice president, said anyone suspected of being intoxicated will be kicked out, and Public Safety Department officials will be looking for any signs of alcohol. We applaud SUUSA for striving to provide a safe, fun environment for students to partake in. When seeking fun this Halloween weekend, be safe. Alcohol is not the answer for fun; its a recipe for danger. X) you're scmj, ykvT iojd'ik 1 AniiXM Moore enlightened students the audience, for the most part, was very respectful of Moore. That says something about Utah culture. It'says we are respectful of people with opposing views. When we listen to opposing viewpoints, we may notice flaws that strengthen our own views. I dont understand why Kay Anderson, the man who sued UVSC to cancel its contract with Moore, was so opposed to Moore speaking. Maybe he believes that college should be a place to be indoctrinated with specific dogma and not a marketplace of ideas. People who dont support Moore could show their malcontent by not attending the speech or by rallying outside the McKay Events Center, as many chose to do. It was a stroke of good luck for UVSC that Sean Hannity was willing to speak and waive his usual $100,000 fee. I wish Moore had agreed to the debate that Hannity proposed. Im glad Hannity went to UVSC because it offered both political views and allowed students to think about the issues and decide for themselves. Im pleased to see all the campaigns encouraging people to vote. One of Moores primary goals for his tour was to encourage nonvoters to vote. I understand the apathy many voters express. In previous years, I too have been an apathetic voter. Many people say, My vote doesnt matter; why bother? Before you think these dangerous thoughts, think about the people who have come before you who were willing to give their lives to be heard. If voting is something people were willing to die for, dont you think its importance? you should So Michael Moore came to UVSC, and contrary to popular belief, the world did not end. The sky did not commence failing, and another big one did not hit California. I personally dont understand what all the opposition is about. I know that Utah, and especially Utah Valley, is a conservative place, and since Moore is a liberal, he is therefore the enemy. However, I would have to agree with the decision of UVSC Student Body President Jim Bassi and Vice President Joe Vogel. In my opinion, it was an excellent thing that Moore went to UVSC. In an article titled Topical Storm Michael from The College Times, UVSCs student newspaper, Vogel said, I share in the hope . . . that, in the end, UVSC students can proudly say the world of ideas is our campus. College, in my humble view, is a time in our lives when we should be exposed to various viewpoints. What is the Moore opposition afraid of? Do they fear hell bring out his notorious ray and turn everyone into democrats? Before you start thinking of me as a liberal, let me just say that I plan to vote for Bush in the upcoming election because, in my opinion, he has a plan for everything, while Kerrys only plan is to be against Bush. Having said that, let me say that being exposed to different viewpoints has its advantages. In reading the article in The College Times, I was happy to read that mind-contr- Shayne Hudson is a staff writer for the University Journal. He can be reached at shudsonsuujournal.com. Entertainment wastes valuable time There is one area of my life in which I may be a hypocrite. I hope Im not, but I think I might just be. First let me explain some of my background. I love entertainment. I have cable TV, high speed Internet and nearly 400 recorded movies. I have a radio in every room of my apartment, including the bathroom. I have worshipped for many years at the altars of music, movies and television maybe too much. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is my fight against boredom. Call it attention deficit disorder if you want, but I cant stand to just sit still. Commercials get clicked over until I find something that entertains me. I am not alone. DVD players are found in most new family cars. Gaming systems are installed next to the radio in sports cars. We all crave entrainment, all the time. However, I have stopped at a point where many have gleefully danced to entertainment absurdity, throwing great gobs of cash along the way. We really need to back up and throw some money at something other than building bigger, better entertainment venues. Personally, I dont feel very good about Britney Spears receiving a huge paycheck to sing badly and show young, preadolescent girls how to dress. Now we come to the stats portion of our show. Jerry Seinfeld is the highest paid television actor, according to faiEi DacEi MimCI 9AW C ITyOTAW DIRECTING STAFF AND DESK PHONE NUMBERS: Editor Melissa Nielsen Q. Not bad for a show about nothing. The Guinness folks also say Harrison Ford has made more money in the movie industry than any other single actor. Ford has acted in about 25 films, generating total earnings of more than $3 billion. According to Ticketmaster.com, floor tickets to see county singer Tim McGraw perform at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas cost $90 a pop. People who pay that price must think that his wife, Faith Hill, will show up so they will get a two for one. Not only are actors and musical acts getting a huge pile of money to sleep on; sports stars get more than their share. Now, before anyone jumps me about this, lets get it straight. All sports are entertainment, period. Check it out: the Boston Red Sox paid Manny Ramirez $22.5 million this year, according to Probably more will come if the Sox win the World Series this year. This is a catastrophe in the making. We are spending more money and time than we have on the fight against boredom, myself included. We distance ourselves from humanity and pay people like J. Lo to do it. Entertainment is like many indulges; a little dab wont hurt, but too much is destructive. Ill make you a deal: if you turn off the TV and call a friend to go hang out. Ill take the radio out of the bathroom. box-offi- baseball-reference.co- Vale White is a senior staff writer for the University Journal. He can be reached at vwhitesuujournal.com.
