Show Cl University Journal Thursday, October 28, 2004 NEVER-NEVERLAU- D Continued from Front Page someone must have seen them do it, Godfrey said. Cox echoed the same thought. I would think if someone saw someone else doing something like that, they would take action, Cox said. To this point, it appears that no one did. So either no one saw it going on, or we have some severely apathetic people who need to get more involved. He said if the individuals are found, they will face charges. We will work with our police force here on campus to pursue everything we can do legally, as well as disciplinary actions we could take, Cox said. Rick Brown, chief of Public Safety, said he has been at SUU for 11 years, and this is the first time he has heard of any racial problem this big on campus. We have had some reports over the years of small incidents, but nothing like this, Brown said. We will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law if we catch them. Godfrey said racial tension exists in Cedar City and on SUUs campus, and she and others have heard racial comments. Little negative things are said around campus, and for years no one has said anything about it, Godfrey said. She pointed out one incident "17e have had some reports over the years of small incidents, but nothing like this." uOliday Continued from Front Page Erica Powell, a freshman undeclared major from Sandy, and Marc Morris, a senior biology major from Sandy, dressed as Tinker Bell and Peter Pan for the Delta Psi This OmegaSigma Chi Blockbuster Date Night. d for won award the Wednesday. couple Halloween, she said. A.D. when the Celts celebrated the beginning of the season of death. They celebrated the beginning of the season on Nov. 1 and the day was known as All Hallows Eve. During the season they honored the Lord of the Dead, Anwinn. Celts believed the spirits of those who died during that year also gathered together on All Hallows Eve. The spirits would return to the homes of their relatives because they needed help to cross over to the land of the dead. - Evil spirits were also believed to be unleashed during the season. Pa8e 3 Rick Brown that happened off campus. A couple of (students) were outside of town some doing shooting, and a truck with a some guys drove by and yelled racial slurs at them, Godfrey said. Cox said he regrets that that sort of behavior occurs, especially on campus. It was the work of distorted minds and certainly not symbolic of campus feelings regarding the welcoming mat we set out for all students, Cox said. Godfrey said she wants students to picture how they would feel if the graffiti were about them. To protect their relatives spirits, the Celts would paint their faces and dress in costumes, according to the Web site. To eliminate this Pagan act, the Catholic Church came up with All Saints Day, but the Celts continued to celebrate All Hallows Eve behind the churchs back. When Europeans migrated to America, Catholics continued to practice their religious beliefs. They celebrated Autumn Play Parties, which lasted until the Industrial Revolution. By the end of the Civil War, the Episcopalians and Catholics made it a point to make sure their heritage of All Saints Day and Halloween did not fade away, according to the Web site. In an attempt to keep these holidays alive, they campaigned to get All Saints Day and Halloween on the calendar and in the newspapers. Eventually, people began to celebrate Halloween with bonfires and masquerade parties, according to the Web site. Although Halloween was once a Pagan holiday, it is now a day to dress up, have fun and appreciate all the ghoulish creatures in this world.
