Show n' V' Earth Cluilbs efforts benefit community Waste reduction and management programs are in use throughout America. Trash separation bins are available to many households to promote recycling. This kind of program has the potential to be a statewide program in Utah, but because of a lack of concern for our environment, laziness or the fact that Utah has an immense amount of land for landfills, its never happened. SUUs Earth Club is trying to change that. Earth Club is initiating a curbside recycling program for all Cedar City residents for a small price. Every week club representatives travel to households that use the program and pick up recyclables, then transport them to Blue Sky Recycling in St. George. Robert Elams said the material is separated it after arrives at Blue Sky Recycling. He said paper, cardboard and aluminum is transported to Rocky Mountain Recycling, and glass and plastic recyclables are transported to recycling facilities in Las Vegas. This is a great program. We commend the Earth Club for its efforts in preserving our environment. As population numbers increase, natural resources decrease, and the needs for more recycled goods are greater. According to the official Web site for the Department of Environmental Quality, recycling of all kinds has increased since the year 1995. It reported 1.037 million tons of paper was recycled in Utah in 2000. This number had increased by 154,000 tons since 1995, and a projected increase of 222,000 tons is expected for the year 2005. The Web site reported the amount of recycled glass increased from 1995 to 2000 by 7,000 tons, reaching 84,000 total. In 2000, recycled metals had an increase of 19,000 tons from 1995, reaching 160,000 tons. The Web site reported recycled plastics were increased by 47,000 tons from 1995 to 2000, reaching 319,000 tons. According to the Web site, Weber, Cache, Salt Lake, Utah and Washington counties are the top five county contributors to recycling. With more participation in the Earth Clubs program, our county could be added to this list. Harris said his company currently has the facilities and manpower to provide pickup services to only residential customers and small businesses. He said the pickup fee pickups once a week (which is the only covers same size as residential garbage cans). Ryan Kay, Earth Club president, said at least 30 Cedar City residents signed up for the service. That number is way too small. According to www.cedarcity.org, the projected Iron county population for the year 2005 is 36,457. Something is wrong with this. We have more than 36,000 people in our county, and only 30 customers are using recycling services. Something must change. We have the resources and the people available at our fingertips. We should take advantage of it while we still can. As Earth Club members graduate and move on to bigger and better things, the manpower and dedication could change or cease to exist altogether. We not only need to keep this program alive; we need it to grow.Kenny Laundra, Earth Club adviser, said the goal of the recycling service is to get at least 100 Cedar City customers. UNIVERSITY Attendance changes custom formal . . . what in the world is no wait Formal, stomp, casual going on here? The Homecoming dance is Friday, but no one is quite sure what the theme is. Two weeks ago, I received a phone call saying the theme of the dance, which is traditionally a formal, was changed to a 1 casual stomp and not a couples dance. This idea shocked not only me but everyone in the newsroom. How could they take away the tradition of a formal dance? I took all of my questions to Ashlee Nelson, SUUSA activities vice president, and she said the rumors were just that: rumors. She went on to say that the dance would still have the feel of a couples formal, but not everyone had to have a date or even dress up. Sounds to me like the rumors werent rumors at all, but were, in fact, true. If not everyone has to have a date or even dress up, that sounds like a casual stomp to me. What a lame concept! I, along with several others, had been planning on the formal for weeks. I was even told of several women who had already spent money on their dresses. So what now? Nelson said the dances theme changed because not enough students were attending the dance in the past. She said this change would hopefully make the dance more appealing to a bigger student audience, leading to better attendance. I think the attendance problem isnt stemming from the formal THINKIN Dana Bartholomew is the Opinion Editor for t,ie Univeisity Journal. She can be reached at dbartholomew suujoittn.il. tom. Pageant originality refashioned The Miss America Pageant underwent huge changes for its 50th anniversary, but I dont think they were for the better. To make a bigger splash with audiences, the televised portion was shortened, the swimsuits were skimpier, and reality television was incorporated into the show. For centuries, little girls have watched the program and have wanted to be like the females on the screen. Is it a good idea to change the program for the worse? How will this affect the girls watching? Beauty pageants and scholarship pageants have been going on for decades. What makes this one different from the others? I think they should spice it. Im not sure everyone understands the changes. Let me clarify them for you, and Ill add in things they should think about. The programmers cut the talent portion of the show in half. The final talent competition was originally five talents, but then they cut it down to two! Only having two talents? What the heck? I watch because of the talent. After that, all you have is talking, smiling and swimsuits! A beauty pageant with no talent is like peanut butter with no jelly: dry, boring and not worth having. Reality television was added into the mix. Am I the ONLY person in the world sick of reality TV? It seems reality is the only thing left on f alEi BacCi DIRECTING STAFF AND DESK PHONE NUMBERS: setting; I think it's the lack of publicity. The first official publicity I saw for the danse was on Monday. Some decorations were placed around campus, and an SUUSA News Service article was published in the Journal. I know for a fact that some students dont even know there is going to be a Homecoming dance. I asked my friend, who I see on campus on a daily basis, if he was taking anyone to the Homecoming dance, and he replied, What dance? This student works in the Sharwan Smith Center, the building where the majority of campus publicity takes place, and he didnt know. Now, what does that say about SUUSA activities? Here's a concept: lets advertise for a major event just five days before it takes place, expect loads of money to be made, and if that money isnt made, lets complain about it and justify our changes to the tradition. Sorry, its doesn't work that way. If youre going to change tradition and the rightful memories of several students so you can make more money, you'd better do your homework. Im talking about strategic advertising weeks before the actual event and actually letting students know theie's a dance where they can either dress up or dress down A week's worth of advertising isnt enough, and when you dont make enough money, dont complain. SLUS otliciuls upset several students by making the formal tradition optional" and then only doing five days worth of advertising. Either way, everyone Ive talked to is wealing formats. What will you wear? TV! What about sitcoms? What about originality? The bloopers are the only good part of reality TV. I think they need to add in bloopers and backstage events. I wouldn't want to miss a good fight or two of the contestants kicking each others butts like on Miss Congeniality. The swimsuit competition was redesigned to show the fit beauty queen by making the swimsuits skimpier. What will they think of next? I dont dare say what else they would do to show them being fit. Why not have an exercise, dance or even rapping competition? I would love that. Take away the talent portion and bring in strange competitions like holding spoons on their noses Make them compete as a group. What if they cant dance? Too bad. Every beauty contestant should dance. That could be part of the bloopers tape! Viewer participation was introduced into the show. I actually like this idea. I think it gives the viewer more of a say. But what about having a viewer poll about what the audience would like to see? It is programming for the people, right? Why not have the viewers try to program the show? Have a contest and get some new people in there. I think one of the problems is the people in charge are old men who have no idea what to do with the material they have. Make it interesting for the rest of us! All in all, I think some of the changes are good, but some are really bad. By taking out the talent, they cut out the meat.
