Show I UNIVERSITY bURNAL f PACE r i i 7 Monday, January 26, 2004 A s J L Coach Gary Andersen suddenly deserted the football team with a startling decision to pursue another coaching position at the University of Utah, to which we say, Bad form. Even if he didnt have enough professional regard for the university, he should have at least cared enough about the players to tell them about it. The players have lost a leader, a father figure. The senior leadership on the football team deserve an atta-bo- y for the mature manner with which they have continued with school spirit and encouraging hope for the future of the team. They have continued to be football players, even though they belong to a team with unsure leadership. We encourage them to continue playing the game they came to college desiring to play. They have proved to their peers they can compete and win. SUU had a losing to streak to break when C. fired. was Ray Gregory The university had to pay two coach salaries to make good on Gregorys contract and to get Andersen here, which it was willing to do. Andersen came to the program, turned it completely around, said Heres a taste of what I can do, then turned his back and left. The small taster SUU experienced was an OK season with a record of 7 compared to the football team's prior performance. The season wasnt fantastic, but it was better and was still improving until the head improver abandoned the students he transformed. Andersen has left us with a fledgling team, down the field without a quarterback. The Thunderbirds are six weeks away from spring training and are forced to adjust to a new coaching administration again. It is a shame the administration let this happen right underneath the helmets of dedicated student athletes because they will be the ones who will have to carry on with the unexpected and unfortunate inconvenience. Neither Andersen nor the administration informed the players in advance with sufficient time to adjust and mentally prepare for a changing of the guard. But the situation has happened, and new management will take control. We wish good luck upon the faithful Thunderbirds and n a bought-ou- t, to the disloyal Ute. EDITOR Carli Warr, 586-548- 8 12-ga- 4-- ill-tim- ed good-riddan- ce born-agai- d, Despite what several students believe, an opinion column about teligion is not a violation of the separation of church and state, The Lhuvei liv Journal printed my point of view in the Open Access column on the opinion page Jan. 15 about The Church of Jesus Christ of Lattei-daSaints and tnamage, and I received an oveiwhclming number (it that said I had violated the law of sepaialion ot chinch and state. Some students demanded that anything about the LDS church should not be printed in a school newspaper. According to the first amendment of the Constitution. Congress shall make no law of religion, or respecting an establishment pi oh bit ng the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; Utah is predominately LDS. and every newspaper is bound to have articles andor columns on LDS news every day. It would be completely unoithodox if any Utah newspaper didn't report LDS news, or any lehgious news for that mattei So w hv do some students demand complete separation of chinch and state? Because if there is a hint ol any negative news or criticism regarding the LDS church, apparently it is suddenly against the law. Well. I don't think those students realize how politically incorrect we y would be tf we only reported the news or didn't report any lehgious news at all. Where would America be without religion in the news? Would the public have been made avvaie of the Catholic Church molestation v . . . happy-go-luck- The opinion expressed above is the collective perspective of the University Journals editorial board. The editorial board meets every Monday and Thursday at 11 a.m. in Room 176C of the Sharwan Smith Center. In addition to working for the University Journal, I flip burgers at a d restaurant in town. Its amazing how many times I hear people pull up, wait for a minute, then say, Oh, never mind as d they whip across the street to another joint. Second, make sure you know what you want to oidei befoie you get there. These restaurants have had the same menus for years, with the exception of new promotions. The people inside have a lot to do. the people behind you have a lot to do, and Im sure you do, too. u Sonic even has a board so you can decide what you want before wasting anyone's time at the speaker. Please use it. Once you get to the speaker and hear the friendly voice say, Fit! Can I take your older?, answer him or her. The person on the other end is a teai pet son To not answer is rude. If you were not willing to follow the ptevious rule and don't know what you want when you get there, politely say I'm sorry, but Im not quite ready to order yet. May I have a minute, please? Once you've established what you want to order, say it correctly. No. What about the report of new ward buildings being built in Cedar City? No. Why? Because it would be against the law to report anything about religion. Well, fine, here is what would happen if certain people got their wish of complete separation of church and state. Christians who wear a crucifix can take that off when theyre at school because someone might get offended. High school students who attend seminary dui mg school hours and on school property will now have to do that on their own time in another place because if someone gets their way, that wont happen anymore. LDS missionaries on campus in front of the Library giving out copies of The Book of Mormon, or missionaries on public property in general, will be required to leave the premises. Any news regarding anything religious, positive or negative, LDS or not, will not be allowed in public school newspapers because it violates the law and someones beliefs. The few who get offended at such things will have the power to take these rights away from the many. Fortunately, such laws dont exist, and all religious institutions are free to practice as they wish. As far as separation of church and state is concerned, all public institutions, to my knowledge, dont require prayer in class. Students here are not required to attend classes at the LDS Institute of Religion, and we wont get kicked out if we fail to do so. We are free to enjoy our religious beliefs as we want. I am a student, and I am free to express my opinion in the student newspaper. I did not violate any law regarding the separation of church and state. cover-up- t P I, ru f n - , b .j4 4 U A 4 y tfi Tyler Johnson Editor for the University Journal. He can suujtnirnal.com. is the reached at tjohnson What do you think about coach Gary Andersen leaving SUU? f H.jg to, McDonalds has chicken McNuggets. No one else does. Wendys has chicken nuggets. Thats really what you call them: just nuggets. Chicken sandwiches are called fillets. You pronounce them fillae, not fillet. Wendys has not had breadsticks in three years. It shows incompetency to order them. Many people inside the restaurant can hear you order. I guarantee every one of them is laughing at you and your incompetency when you pronounce these things wrong. Another thing and I dont know why this is so hard for people to is the people inside tire restaurant, who you cant see, understand are making your food. Why tick them off? Too many people come in acting immature and rude. Be courteous when you order, and you may find one less spitwad in your sandwich. While I've never seen it hap Den, I've heard stories. Order everything you want at the speaker. Dont add on to your order at the window. Once youve completed the task of ordering and pull to the window, please have your money ready. Dont decide at the window that you forgot your wallet, or spend forever getting your money. The other night, I had a lady come through and tell me, You might want to shut the window and stay warm because its going to take me awhile to get my money. Why? You know youre going to be paying for something. Have your money ready. Just remember to be courteous, f riendly and polite when you go to the drive-thrIt will make your pmcess of getting fatter more enjoyable for all of us. tfk Editor Tyler Johnson News Melissa Nielsen Associate Editor Associate Editor Opinion Carii Warr 5865488 586-775- 0 9 Editor Katie Allen Copy Chief Liz Bowler, Asst Copy Heather Darata, Graphics David Paystrup 586 1992 Ad Designer Andy Sullivan, 3 Sports Editor Matthew Lust, Photo Editor Katnna Joslin, 2 Web Editor Alex Eagar, 9 j Senior Staff Writers: Dana Bartholomew, Christian Ross Meg Cady, 586 7757 8 Advertising Manager Evan Wilcock Operations Manager John S.
