I Show your I.D.and Get a lg single topping pizza o Davidson: Mr. Fix-- it BY DAVID McEWEN Thunderbird Staff Writer He is like another coach on the sidelines until you see the scissors in his back pocket and hear the words protrude from his mouth. Move it around. Dont let it cool down, advised Ben Davidson, SUUs athletic trainer. As soon as were done lets continued his encouraging words to a limping get it soaked, football player during practice. Davidson, having responsibility for more than 200 athletes in seven mens and six womens sports at SUU, has seen numerous injuries over his 13 years here. He works with athletes in rehabilitating them and makes sure its safe for them to go back out into their respective sport so they dont get hurt again. There are two training rooms on campus where athletes can treatment, the Centrum and the Coliseum of Southern Utah. SUs training rooms are not limited to just athletes. Any student who is injured in intramural sports or just from playing around can come in and see Davidson or one of his assistants. If the injury is too severe then that person will be advised, as are athletes, to see a doctor andor physical therapist. There are nine students who work under Davidson as assistants. There is at least one assistant at every practice and game of all sports representing the university. Students who are pursuing careers in physical therapy, athletic trainer, coaching, sports medicine or any other related field are able to gain valuable hands on experience that will help them in their future. Davidson also recommends that these students take P.E. 308 and 310 for additional insight into their respective careers. The sports that typically have the most injuries are football, gymnastics and mens basketball, in that order. Trying to prevent sports injuries is another part of Davidsons job. In coordination with coaches, maintenance and ground crews, he sees that athletes get proper conditioning, use appropriate equipment, receive adequate taping and make sure that the facilities are free from fault. The second half of Davidsons title has changed recently from director of the fitness center to assistant professor of physical education. He says that he enjoys his job because its a very rewarding experience to see any athlete get over an injury. 579 S.
