Show Birds bomb Gators by Bay BY JAY HINTON command of the game. Tight end Ryan Moynier and quarterback James Armendariz led the Bird offense with a deadly aerial attack. Armendariz completed 9 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns and Moynier gathered five catches for those same four TDs and 168 yards. Meanwhile the Bird defense registered eight quarterback sacks in limiting the Gator offense. The Birds quickly made the score 0 when Armendariz slipped two yards for the score. The Gators promptly closed the gap to The duo of Armendariz and Moynier struck for two consecutive TD tosses of 13 and 28 yards and the Birds were up 21-- 9 after Jason Haslams kicks. To end the half, Zed Robinson capped a drive with a three-yar- d run. SUUs final scores came on touchdown passes from Armendariz to Moynier. The first of which went for 32 yards and then second came late in the fourth quarter when Moynier hauled in a catch for a score. Halsam added the PAT; and the Birds held a unsurmountable 42-lead. The win gives the Birds the momentum they need before they jump head first into Western Football Conference play when they host the Portland State Vikings in the Coliseum of Southern Utah Saturday evening. SUU Head Coach Jack Bishop said he feels that the win over SFSU was critical game in his teams success. Its a good win for us, said We felt like we had to win Bishop. this game as we go into Portland State next week. Anytime we play Portland our kids feel like its the biggest game of the year. The Bird offense accumulated 489 total yards 314 yards via the air and 175 yards on the ground. Defensively the Birds registered eight quarterback sacks in limiting the Gator offense. Robinson turned in another stellar performance against San Francisco State Saturday afternoon by compiling 78 yards on 22 carries and scoring a touchdown. Included in Robinsons statistics were 191 yards on 21 rushing attempts, two pass - i I 15-1- Robinson earns V J SOFTBALL: SUU Lady Bird Coach Joy Peterson announced that fall softball tryouts for the 1991-9- 2 season will begin Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. at the softball diamond. All interested should come prepared to practice. Peterson said that some preparations need to be made before the club swings bats with rivals at the Utah State University te Tournament. We are talking within two weeks of our first contest we have to make sure that we prove eligibility, said Peterson, Then make make sure we have a good look wants to come out and whether we can use them or not. CROSS COUNTRY: Cross country coach Jim Shaw wasnt expecting to blow anyone away in the teams meet at Utah State University Saturday, but as the results show the lady harriers fared well by placing second behind USU in the four-teatournament. Heather Witney led SUU with a finish and winning time of 20:16.59 in the 5K race. Freshman first-place Anna Pett finished seventh with a time of 22:22.93. Other solid finishers were Kristen Shaw, Erika Timm and Cami Gillman with finishes of ninth, 10th, and 17th, respectively. As for the men, Bob Spalliero led the Birds with a ninth place finish. Closely behind Spalliero were Mike Harchick and Conley Moon with finishes of 15th and 18th. GOLF: More tough competition awaits the young SUU golf team in its next meet, the Falcon Invitational hosted Oct. 6 in Colorado Springs, Colo., by the Air Force Academy. The Birds are coming off a 12th place finish at the Wyoming-Re- d Jacoby Invitational at Laramie, Wyo. Well be facing the same level of competition at the Falcon, said SUU Golf Coach John Evans, But there will probably be more teams entered.
