The AFB is invited to represent the United States at this prestigious annual dance festival June Throughout their y tour of the Soviet Union, the dancers will perform in Petrograd, Estonia, and Latvia. Leningrad natives hold the festival during late June, because they believe that their city is at its most beautiful peak then fog enshrouds the city and turns lights into fuzzy halos. 21-2- The AFBs friendship tour will include performances in Petrograd, Estonia, and Latvia. Once we get into Russia, they will pay our expenses, but we need to get there first, said Burch Mann, founder and choreographer for the troupe. She is also an at SUSC and teaches advanced dance classes. The AFBs troupe size is 30 people including 22 dancers, three singers, and five technicians. We already have $20,000 and were still getting money coming in, Mann said. We appreciate any donation no matter how much it is. Every effort to get this group over there is worth it. She emphasized that the festival is a time when dancers from all over the world meet as friends, an important THE little step toward achieving world peace. This trip is important for publicizing the dance company, but also for publicizing SUSC and Utah, she said. Now in their 28th season, the AFB continues to perform music, dance, and literature from Americas past. We try to convey the power, exuberance, the enthusiasm and courage of Americas history, Mann said. We draw on themes such as pioneer history and early jazz. This chance to perform in the Soviet Union is the result of hours of work. Mark Liftman, the scientist who designed the Hansen planetarium in Salt Lake City, is a friend of Manns and was instrumental in helping the AFB reach this opportunity, Mann said. He arranged for the director of the Leningrad October Concert Hall meet Mann. They spent a week in Cedar City, watching videos of the AFB and reading dance reviews. They liked what they saw and invited the AFB to attend the festival, Mann said. Anyone interested in helping the AFB can make a donation to the SU Foundation. Just right tour on the check, Mann said.
