Center SUSC STUDENTS ONLY Mankind has moved away from the superstitious notion that good fortune is the direct result of fate but has yet to yield the equally foolish concept that monetary wealth assures happiness. Of course, success cannot be gauged in dollar value alone, but must include the measure that comes with a sound sense of despite lifes circumstances; one neednt look far to discover the emotional wreckage of many Wall Street hopefuls and budding industrialists who opted to sacrifice everything for the greenback. Sacrifice has a different meaning for Dixie Leavitt. As a deeply religious man, he fosters the strong belief that obedience and sacrifice are prerequisites for success. As you serve your fellow man you serve the Lord, he says with a confidence hes groomed despite hard physical labor and failed enterprise. But dont think for one moment that Leavitt is an embittered man. Quite the contrary, his optimism has carried him from his fathers dairy farm in Bunkerville, Nev., to the chambers of the state capitol, to seeing the fulfillment of many of his lifes goals. If anything, hes fashioned lifes adversity into a broadsword to help him cut a path toward success. Never one to sit idly by the sidelines, Leavitt has had more than his share of pratfalls playing end in football and guard in basketball for Virgin Valley High School. As an athlete, he learned his first, valuable lesson in the meaning of discouragement. I must say, there were times I wanted to give up. Discouragement is contagious but optimism is likewise. Its easier for a person to get down when they are fatigued then they get selfish. Since his days as a struggling athlete, Leavitt has made ir ,, point to not only planning the goals he wishes to achieve carefully, but putting each goal to the litmus test of devout prayer and willingness to make the requisite sacrifices. Apparently, his formula for success works. Employed variously as a fry cook, musician, printer, and laundry worker to support himself through the Branch Agricultural College, from 1947 to 1951, Leavitts diligence paid off when he met his wife of 40 years, the former Anne Okerland. Selecting ones mate is a most important decision, Leavitt paused reflectively, she is the most important link to the family and is my greatest wealth. As a newlywed and recent graduate, Leavitts goals were modified to accomodate his rapidly changing responsibilities. Determined to have a home in the Cedar City area within five years, he jumped feet first into the insurance business just as 800 employees were being layed off from the local iron mines. From that point on, he has lived by the credo of not putting all his eggs in one basket. His many accomplishments has prompted some to equate this humble man as the embodiment of the Horatio Alger success story. Through sheer determination and faith in God, he has launched into business careers as varied as a bed and breakfast enterprise, a restaurant, refurbishing old structures, and creating the Leavitt Insurance Group, with offices throughout Utah and Arizona. Some people like to golf, others like to hunt or go boating. I like the idea of making something with little value into something of value. Not satisfied with his accomplishments, feeling that he still owed something to the people of southern Utah, Leavitt has successfully served in both the House of Representatives and Senate for a total of 14 years. In addition, he has served as a mission president in Leeds, England, for three years. Needless to say, Leavitt has proven time and again that to serve ones fellow man is truly a blessing. Through his perseverance, all of Utahs nine institutions of higher learning have school and benefited, particularly, SUSC, which became a four-yemost recently passed into university staius uue to his wisdom, stamina, and selflessness. Despite all he has done in business and politics, hes remained a doting father and husband. Turning to the portraits of his six sons conspicuously arranged on his office wall, Leavitts smile said everything. Indeed, wealth is not always measured in dollars and cents.
