Show SUSC 1990 graduates given option of SUU diploma BY TETER said these studen. would receive a letter in late summer to certify their completion, and then an SUU diploma would be sent to them in January, 1991. The 1990 graduating class will be receiving a brochure in the next two to three weeks explaining these details. Those graduates selecting the second option will need to notify the registrars office no later than May 1, 1990. If graduates do not contact the office by that date, it will be assumed the student wants an SUSC diploma, he said. Church said, The major impetus in changing to the University title was the direct benefit to our graduates. We desire to give all students a University diploma. It doesn't change the quality of the education they receive, but it does influence the publics perception of the diploma. Weber State College made a different decision earlier Church TAGG In its March meeting, the Institutional Council voted in favor of the Commencement Committees proposal to allow the 1990 graduating class to graduate with a University diploma. However, according to Vice President for Student Services Sterling Church, students will have to wait until 1991 to receive the actual document. Two diploma options are being offered he said. The first option would allow students to graduate with an SUSC diploma just as in past years. The diplomas would be sent to graduates in late summer when all the necessary administrative work has been completed. Those graduates wanting Southern Utah University on their diploma may choose the second option. this month. President Stephen Nadaulds office issued a statement that said, Students who complete their work for graduation and who commence June 1990 will be given a Weber State College diploma including a scroll-typ- e metallic sticker with the following inscription: Effective January 1991 Weber State College became Weber State University'. In justifying SUSCs decision Church said that students who finish their schooling at the end of summer school have to wait nine to ten months until the next commencement exercises to graduate; however SUSC students graduating in June will be waiting only seven months to receive a university diploma. A university diploma would be more appreciated than a college diploma with a university sticker on it, he said.
