Show SUSC THE THUNDERBIRD Letters Recent elections yyi yv--i abridge laws, student rights (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4) voting booths like relentless sharks searching for prey. I was assaulted upon walking into the Library by several candidates, who demanded that I vote for them. There was no discussion of the issues here, just the brusque request for support as they thrust yet another coupon into my hand. Now correct me if I am wrong, but in the real world isnt there a law prohibiting campaign literature and candidates within 200 feet of the polls? Why is it that the administration refused to count votes for Bart Simpson? It is a blatant abridgement of my Constitutional rights for my vote to be ignored, Are we going to settle for this flagrant violation of our rights and remain the voiceless mass...? tically, however, we see that this argument is a red herring thrown up by the administration to cloud the issue. Assuming that num- bering the ballots is the only way to prevent voting duplicity is a ridiculous assertion simply because it is not necessary. Remember that we were all required to sign by our names at the polls. The signatures could serve the same purpose that the numbers allegedly would. Nonetheless, our right to a private vote has been neglected, turning the entire process into a facade, which poorly mimics its original model. If my ballot can be looked up, and my voting preference seen, where is the secrecy of the ballot? The voting committee has assured anonymity, but the opportunity for illegal activity exists, and that is wrong. Remember that Manuel Noriega promised the same things in the Panamanian elections. The results, however, were terror, intimidation, and a complete miscarriage of the democratic i L. I interpret this little game as a ploy of the administration to compel me to ignore my rights, and force me to vote for a candidate of party origin, rather than the candidate of my choice. Furthermore, the refusal to count the votes for Bart undoubtedly rendered an inaccurate count of the true results. Finally, every ballot was given a number, and these numbers were recorded by the voters names. This practice gives rise to the possibility of our voting preference being looked up. The administration claims that this highly illegal practice prevents voting duplicity. When looked at realis Apparently we are not here to get an education but to be used as ' pawns in someone elses power plays. In spite of this, it states in the SUSC Constitution that a recall can be made with the assent of 20 percent of the student body. Additionally, the United States Constitution ensures us that the private voting process is a holy covenant that shall not be interfered with. The question I then pose is this: Are we going to settle for this flagrant violation of our rights and remain the voiceless mass, or should we request a recall and see the true essence of democracy served?
