BY BRENT RICHEY Coming off of a record breaking performance Friday night, SUSCs gymnastics team saw its chances to break into the top 20 soar But top 20 teams are not insured a post season berth Gymnastics is divided into regions, and SUSC belongs to the same region as Utah, BYU, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arizona State all ranked in the top seven last year So just when it looked as if SUSC might have a chance to break into the tournament for the regional first time in school history with its allfreshman team, somebody went and changed the rules Under the old system, there were 17 teams in SUSCs region, and 12 of those teams qualified for the region tourney Teams qualified based on a score calculated by averaging the two best home meets, the two best away meets and any other score. With the new system, 14 teams comprise SUSCs region, and only seven qualify for the region tournament BYU was the number-sevesquad last year v ith an average of about 186, which is about what they are scoring this year Friday night SUSC took another step on the road to playing with the big boys, scoring 182 5 points to beat UC Davis 175. SUs average score is now post-seaso- n n 179 36.
