Dr. Stephen Brandon, who has been at SUSC for a year, ia the director of the band. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Education with a bachelors degree in music education. He then went on to the University of Iowa and received a masters degree in musical art. Then he went to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., to achieve his doctorate in musical arts. SUSC Students i ! i Brandon is enthusiastic about this years band, even though the number of people involved is not enough. He said, This is a good year-- a time of transition. Its also a good year for the school. All of the art departments are important. Dance, theatre and music enrich lives. The band has several concerts planned for the year, the first of which is on Dec. 6 in the Thorley Recital Hall. It hopes to be involved in athletic events and other things that come up during the year, Brandon said. But we need to get more people involved. Right now, the band has about seven pipers, but Brandon would like to see it increase to about 20. One way Brandon plans to recruit more musicians is by compiling a list of students who were connected with music in high school and contacting each one personally. He encourages anyone who has an interest in music to get involved. Students who are interested must contact me and enroll in $15--an- d Music 292 and buy a chanter-abo- ut a book, Brandon said. They dont have to be music major. A chanter is the keyboard of the instrument. Students will have to learn the fingering and scales of the bagpipe before actually attempting to make music using the whole outfit. The bagpipe is a difficult instrument to master so any musical background would be helpful to interested students. The Scarlet and Black Ceremonial Band has existed, the way it is known today, for about three years. David Nyman began the program, but has since moved on to the division of continuing education.
