THUNDERBIRD Circle Dining ; f Nestled just beneath the main floor of the SUSC library is one of SUSCs and Cedar Citys finest compilations of cultural and historical books, documents, photos and artifacts. From this description, Special Collections, located on the second floor of the SUSC library, may sound like a museum, which it is. But as Special Collections Coordifiator Blanch Clegg is quick to point out, Special Collections has more to offer then just the display of items of antiquity. Iron County Museum is a museum, she said, were more of a library, but also a museum. One of the main points Clegg would like to express to the student body is that Special Collections is a valuable learning and research area that was intended not merely to be looked at, but to be used. Items housed in Special Collections include back-date- d newspapers, maps, a Shakespeare collection, art books and plates, as well as materials vital in preserving and learning about the history of Southern Utah and SUSC. There are photos of indigenous Native Americans, the Paiute and Navajo, and oral histories given by persons who have seen the history of Southern Utah first hand. These oral histories have been transcribed from the audio tape on which they were originally recorded. The history of SUSC is available to students through Special Collections College Archives, which contains old yearbooks, photos and catalogs. Also open to students is a piece of SUSC history which is responsible for much of the materials found in Special Collections, the Seymour Room. The Seymour Room was developed in 1969 when John Laurence Seymour, traveling through Cedar City to view the Shakespeare Festival, struck a deal with school officials which would allow him a place to study and compose play music in return for his memorabilia which he was assured would be preserved by the school. Seymour was given a room on the second floor of the library in which he housed his collection of books, artifacts, Victorian furniture and a piano. Seymour, who had no family, kept office hours in his library study and slept in a room at Oak Hall when he was not traveling until his death on February 1, 1986. The Seymour room contains the oldest of Special Collections many venerable publications; a Latin Vulgate Bible, dated 1628. In addition to the Bible there are many other books and records which Clegg and her staff are still trying to catalog and make available for student use. Another point of interest is the William Rees Palmer Room. It is decorated with furnishings which belonged to Palmer. The room contains Indian artifacts, books and documents donated by Palmer. Because of the age and value of the materials in Special Collections, many items may not be handled, but the majority of the collection is for public use and can be viewed on the premises. No materials may be checked out overnight.
