Show The Summerbird 11 July 31, 1989 Concerts slated August 4, Sara Penny and Evelyn Jones will be featured in the second concert for the Southern Utah Ensembles sixth season of chamber music, August 4, while Deseretwind, a harp and flute duo will perform Aug. 11. Each lunch hour concert begins at 12:30 and is planned to end by 1:30 p.m. so Utah Shakespearean Festival patrons may also attend a matinee at 2 p.m. All concerts, sponsored by Music Arts and the Southern Utah State music department, are located in the Thorley Recital Hall in the SUSC Music Building. The second movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is programmed as well as romantic favorites such as Berceuse by Godard and Liebeslied by Fritz Kreisler. Csardas is a gypsy show piece while the charming Sonatina, Opus 100 by Dvorak was written as a gift to the composers children. Two gavottes by Rameau complete the violin section. Viola selections will include a Tango by Albeniz, Nina by Pergolesi, and an Allegro by Vivaldi. A French composition which translates to After a Dream and the theme of Young Prince and Princess from Scheherezade will also be included in the program. The teller viola to be used for the concert was donated to SUSC by Orien Dailey. Sara Penny has performed and taught in southern Utah as well as in Beaumont, Texas, and Cork, Ireland. She initiated the chamber music series with Jan Harrison and Dr. Virginia Stitt. Penny has directed the annual Music Festival at Southern Utah State for six years and established the Suzuki Strings program which is now under the auspices of the SUSC Division of Continuing Education. Penny will be teaching at the Lebanon Community College in Pennsylvania during the next academic year while her husband, Dr. Desmond Penny, is on sabbatical at Dickinson College, located in nearby Carlisle, Penn. Evelyn Jones has performed extensively in southern Utah. She is an adjunct professor of music at SUSC where she teaches piano. She and Penny are on the founding Board of Directors for the Orchestra of Southern Utah. Deseretwind, the Aug. 11 attraction, is composed of Cynthia Smith, flute, and Kim DeLibero, harp. Both have considerable professional performing experience. They have chosen a varied program which ranges from the operatic Intermezzo of Carmen to a Serenade by Persichetti. Two medieval dances, Moon Over the Ruined Castle by Taki, and a sonata by Kumpholtz will also be performed. French will also composers Ibert, Faure, and Saint-Saen- s be represented. ; Smith has recorded and performed with the Detroit Concert Band and the Greater Michigan Symphony Orchestra. She was an artistclinician with Young Audiences of Michigan and founded a professional touring flute quartet. Now living in Las Vegas, she performs frequently and is on the faculty of the Nevada School of the Arts. DeLibero is a graduate of Indiana University and was the principal harpist for five symphony orchestras in three states before moving to Las Vegas. She founded a chamber music trio and is a commercial recording artist for television, films, and albums. She performs in many of the major Las Vegas showrooms and has toured with Johny Mathis, Wayne Newton, Henry Mancini, and Larry Gatlin. Concert admission is $4 and tickets will be available at the door. Southern Utah Ensembles concerts are included on the Music Arts season ticket. Students will be admitted free with identification. Advance tickets are available at Munsons Music World, 588 South Main, and Campbell Music, 491 South Main. Camp Shakespeare convenes Aug. Camp Shakespeare, a workshop designed for all students high school juniors and above is scheduled August 1 at SUSG Cost of the workshop is $350 and will include five days of chaperoned housing in SUSC dorms, meals, three quarter units of college credit, tickets to Utah Shakespeare Festival productions of The Tempest, Macbeth, The Winters Tale, and Molieres The Imaginary Invalid, Royal Tea with Queen Elizabeth, The Renaissance Feaste, a backstage tour and class sessions from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. each day. Lectures and discussions will be led by actors, 2-- directors, designers, stage technicians, Shakespeare scholars, and other members of the 1989 festival professional comp any. Participants will earn three quarter units of credit (equal to two semester units) from SUSC for participating in the class. Because the primary emphasis of the course is on interaction between the students and actors, directors, and scholars at the Shakespeare Festival, grades will be recorded as credit, with no exams or papers required. Credit can be earned on any one of three levels: English 292, English 492, or Education 592.
