Show PAGE 6 THE THUNDERBIRD SUSC MONDAY, MAY 1, 1989 - ARTS & LEISURE Stiver to play final role here Michael Stiver, a senior theatre major from Las Vegas, Nev., rounds out his SUSC career with the leading role in the upcoming Main Stage production The Scarlet Pimpernel. The play opens May 4 at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium and plays May 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Ive been acting as long as I can remember, said Stiver, who got his start as a child performing skits for family members. His interest in acting blossomed in high school when he got his first serious stage role as a sophomore. After graduating from high school in 1984 he came to SUSC to refine his craft. SUSC gives you a chance to try a bunch of different things and decide what it is you want to do, said Stiver, who began working in the costume shop in the spring of 1985. In the four years since, he has progressed from beginning stitcher to head wigmaker. His official title is assistant to the designer, directly under designer Sandra Stiglinski. He has designed costumes for past productions including Private Lives in 1986, The Octette Bridge Club in 1987 and House of Blue Leaves, last fall quarter. While attending SUSC he has also acquired a working knowledge of designing sets, sewing costumes, hairdressing, stage management, and promotions. Stiver worked as a dancer in the Greenshow, for the Utah Shakespearean Festival during the 1985 and 86 seasons. He also played the role of the chairman in the fall theatre production The Mystery of Edwin Drood. In addition to acting, Stiver began dancing when he came to SUSC and performed with the American Folk Ballet, which incorporates a mixture of -- tap, ballet and modern dance, in 1987 and will again be dancing with the troupe during its 1989 summer season. Stivers upcoming role in The Scarlet Pimpernel is that of Sir Percival Blakeney Baronet who, according to Stiver, is a gallant and suave hero. He has impeccable taste and the most beautiful and captivating wife in all of England. Hes dedicated to justice like superman but doesnt fly. The Scarlet Pimpernel is an action, with adventure, romantic-comedeverything from guilotines to sword fights, and hundreds of nuns, quips Stiver. The Scarlet Pimpernel is based on an old French novel about the French revolution, and has been made into many screenplays including a CBS made for T.V. movie starring Jane Seymour, Anthony Andrews, and Ian McKellan, a few years ago. It takes place in 1792 in France and England, and is about a band of sportsmen from England who rescue the aristocrats from the king with a hairs breadth escape, said Stiver. Sir Blakeneys beautiful French wife Marguerite, will be played by Gayle Staffanson. Stiver is one of five finalists for the Thunderbird Performer of the Year award, which will be presented May 20. After graduation, and his summer season with the American Folk Ballet, Stiver plans to continue his education at the University of South Carolina where he has been given a scholarship to study fine arts with an acting emphasis. According to Stiver his parents didnt give him much encouragement at first but theyre behind me 500 percent now. r Michael Stiver as Sir Percival Blakeney Bt., and Gayle Staffanson as Marguerite Blakeney in the upcoming production of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel, which opens May 4. jr Cedar (( I)) -- xiL , DEBUT MUSIC: THE CURE, THE CULT, LOU REED, LIVING COLOUR, TOM TOM CLUB Dermatology LYNN G.
