Baers message on assertiveness encouraged the audience to identify proper attitudes, strike back when necessary and acquire self-smart- of the best selling book Dont Say Yes When You Baer, Want to Say No, said, Saying no is important, but its defensive. However, at times being able to say no I cant do it is healthy and. necessary. Baer feels that the key to good assertiveness lies in our ability to foster a positive attitude. She suggested that a positive attitude can be reinforced by making up arguments to support our views, writing them down, recording them on tape and then playing then back to ourselves often, to keep our opinions fresh. With this mental training Baer believes we can become skilled in acceptable aggression and strike out when necessary. Aggression often has negative connotations, she said, but in certain conditions it is very justified as long as we realize it is our deliberate choice and not just our emotions reacting. Such action can increase our self esteem and help us to obtain our goals, she said. Baer shared a personal experience to illustrate acceptable aggression. When the copy editor of one of the books with her husband changed quotes from William Shakespeare and Mark Twain in their manuscript, Baer chose to protect their names and the integrity of their work by insisting that the quotes be changed back. Baer said we should be able to say, I may not be able to control what happens to me in life, but I can control my reaction can be gained by applying what Baer calls to it. The Ashcroft Observatory will offer a program tonight at 9 p.m. The free program is open to the public and will feature various celestial observations, under the direction of Brent Sorenson, assistant professor of physical science. The observatory is located three miles southwest of Cedar City. It is reached by traveling west on Utah Highway 56 then turning south on Western View.
