Debators win at Mardi Gras, Saluki By placing high on two recent tournaments, SUSC forensic students continue to progress towards recognized competitiveness. SUSC debater David Sproul waltzed away with first place speaker honors at the recent Saluki National Invitational. His partner Melinda Riding finished sixth in overall speaker points at the Southern Illinois University tournament. The SUSC team finished third in open division CEDA competition, defeating teams from Cornell University, the University of Illinois, Kansas State University, and the University of Missouri Kansas City in the preliminary rounds. Another SUSC team, Shannon Lane and J.P. Hendricks, finished preliminaries with a 4 record. The Saluki National, SUSC Forensic Coach Tom Murphy said, is one of the toughest debate tournaments in the country with more than 60 3-- teams from 22 colleges and universities competing for top honors. Forensic students also traveled to Baton Rouge, La. the same weekend to win individual events sweepstakes at Louisiana State Universitys Mardi Gras Classic. The first place trophy went to SUSC with 71 points. Troy State University from Alabama was second with 65 points, with third place going to Rice University, Houston, Texas, with 48 points. Peter Tagg, John Vitullo, Marta Walz and Troy Meeks represented SUSC at the Mardi Gras Classic, and between them they broke nine events into the final rounds of competition. Overall, I was very proud of our performance, said Morman. This gives us a good idea of what some of our national tournament competition will be like in March and April.
