Show THE THUNDERBIRD SUSC MONDAY JANUARY 23, 1989 PAGE 5 Actor highlights Kings accomplishments during Convo Black activist Robert Ingram, Jr. underscores minority accomplishments of music and literature through BY JODI RHINARD Robert Ingram, Jr., shared with SUSCs student body his perspective on what it means to be black in a predominantly white country at Thursdays Convocation. There are opportunities for minorities, but there is still token integration and prejudice in minor forms, said Ingram, explaining his perception of black Americans progress in society. The U.S. is still a predominantly racist country in my opinion, he said. Ingram outlined a two-fol- d purpose: to honor the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., who stood for love, brotherhood, and peace for mankind, and to enlighten the black and white population as to the accomplishments of black people. Ingram echoed Kings purpose with his presentation emotional oration of Kings I Have A Dream. Like King, Ingram spoke from the heart with his desire to forward the cause of minorities. Although he recognized racism in America, King said he also supported the golden rule and as a solution to the conflict. He commended treating everyone as they want to be treated themselves. Treat them as an equal, but first love and respect yourself. Ingram accentuated his presentation self-estee- with recitations of music and literature by black authors and composers. He believes that among black Americans greatest cultural contributions are music, art and literature. Next weeks Convocation speakers Kristin Ries, M.D., and researcher Byron K. Murray will offer discussion on the spread of AIDS to Utah. SUSCs Convocation Coordinator Lana Johnson notes that the speakers invite audience participation. Duke prints SUSC paper A paper written by Associate Professor of Business Rhead S. Bowman examining three major economists and their views toward technological change will appear in the History of Political Economy. Smith, Mill and Marshall on Human Capital Formation will appear in the Summer 1989 issue of the Duke University Journal. Bowmans article examines the role of government in the education process and the influence the three writers had on human capital theory. According to Bowman, Smith wrote during the early phases of the Industrial Revolution and noted that technological change and the division of labor had reduced the need for lengthy education. Some 100 years later, Mill suggested that general intelligence had a high economic value. Writing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Marshall noted that technological change demanded more highly educated workers. Marshall was the first economist, Bowman said, to make a good case for the proposition that general education was directly linked to labor productivity. Grab your party hat!
