RHODES Administrative changes will take place this summer at SUSC as a result of rapid growth in the summer school program. Phillip C. Provost Terry D. Alger said, "Dr. Carter will have a more direct role in making this a formal fourth quarter of the college and in directing deans of the other four schools and department heads." David Nyman will resign his position as chair of the music department to serve as assistant dean of summer school during the summer quarter. He will continue as a music professor and bandmaster of the Scarlet and Black ceremonial band. This administrative change will have a direct impact on SUSC's involvement in Cedar City's "Festival City" concept. "It is our long-rang- e goal," said Alger, "to establish an extensive summer program in the arts. The change will build on the tradition established by the Utah Shakespearean Festival (USF), and Nyman will have much influence in the planning. Additions recently included in the summer program are the Highland Heritage Festival and the American Folk Ballet, which is joined this year for the first time 2 Ballet West residency. by a July Alger said enrollment in summer school has nearly doubled in the past four years. Last year, summer enrollment stood at a recoid 1,400 students. Thousands more visit SUSC each summer for special workshops, youth conferences, the Utah Summer Games, Elderhostel programs. Girls' State, the summer lecture series and cultural events such as the Utah Shakespearean Festival, the American Folk Ballet and the Gathering of the Clans. This year it is estimated that as many as 95,000 people will visit the campus, Carter said. Registration for summer quarter begins today. Classes will start June 20 for those students participating in the first summer session. i Author to speak at Convo Thursday's Convocation speaker Ivy Ruckman is a teacher and writer, she says, because it's in her genes. Her presentation begins at 1 1 a.m. in the Auditorium. Ruckman comes from a long line of ministers and teachers who valued "the word" long before she was bom.
