Show THE THUNDERBIRD ! MONDAY MAY 16, 1988 PACE 5 iiifinriiii Priority of the 'image' stifles criticism here TO THE EDITOR: The SUSC administration has pursued a goal of building a better public image for our college. In this, they have succeeded. This campaign has resulted in more awareness of and recognition for SUSC. This has been accomplished in a number of ways, including T.V. commercials, highly visible events at the Centrum (itself an the Scarlet and Black, the Utah Summer Games and the move into NCAA image-booster- ), athletics. We must not exclude the perennial strength of the Utah Shakespearean Festival, undoubtedly one of the college's greatest and most enduring assets, as well as a great boon to its image. The priority of this imagemaking program is very high. It may, however, produce negative effects. There is a possible danger in presenting the college in such a positive light. A logical extension of our carefully cultivated image is the idea that SUSC "can do no wrong." Asa result, negative criticism would not only be frowned upon, but would be seen as a form of treason. To me, the objective of looking good in the public eye has resulted in an atmosphere that discourages public questions regarding policy. I have noted in my years at SUSC, a fear of speaking in a critical way about the policies of the college. Our administration Division I should be encouraging discussion, rather than stifling it, or .dismissing objections as so much hokum. An institution of higher learning should, by its SAELSS SPPTS YAMAHA MOTORCYCLES BTOS create an nature, very atmosphere where no one fears open, frank dialogue, and where debate does not descend to the level of vindictive, personal & FOUR-WHEELER- attacks and Here, the walls of bias must crumble. Ignoring or criticizing honest concerns about SUSC displays either an insecurity about the school's image, or an aristocratic lack of concern for the thoughts of those with a vested interest in our institution. Our college must not be excluded as a sacred cow from this academic ideal of mud-slingin- g. I I make a factual case for my want to make observations. 17TH ANNUAL SUSC STUDENT ART I what I consider to be an important question public record. S II 017 a matter of applaud the efforts of the administration in securing a better image for SUSC, and sincerely hope that our image leaves room for constructive dialogue. There is nothing more positive for our stature than to possess a reputation for open, and honest sensitivity to public concerns.
