Show The Thunderbird Fisher and Pilling earn and Fisher sets school records in the 5,000 Jolene Fisher and Tim Pilling represented SUSC at the NALA National Track and Field Meet and came away with honors. Fisher and Pilling both received honors for their performances in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Fisher set two school records, and captured second in both the 5,000 and the 10,000 meters and Pilling raced to fifth place in the 5,000 meters. In the 10,000 meters Thursday, Fisher smashed the old SUSC record by 68.28 seconds in 36:15.60. Fishers second place time was nine seconds behind Hillsdale (Michigan) College freshman Erin Gillespie who shattered the national record finishing in 35:06.51. Fishers time was 36:15.60 beating the SUSC record by 68.28 seconds, according to SUSC Coach Ben Davidson. In the 5,000 meters Fisher was again defeated Gillespie. Fisher bested her old record by about 45 seconds with a time of 17:03.12, the old mark was 17:59. Fisher said that the competition at the national meet pushed her to do better and that runners train to peak at the national meet. She added that the altitude also made a difference, Arkansas is lower than the Intermountain West where her previous times have been recorded. Fisher was keyed up for the meet because she realized it was her last as a collegiate athlete. Fisher said she felt that she could have defeated Gillespie in the 5,000 meter race if she had started to kick earlier. I should have beat her, that will haunt me, Fisher said. Fisher closed the gap but ran out of time, she said. Pilling ran a personal best in the 5,000 meter trials Friday by posting a time of 14:35.34, Then went onto His improve on that time in the finals Saturday night. finals time of 14:24.23 is about two seconds off the SUSC record. The top six performers in the mens 5,000 and the womens 5,000 and 10,000 were all selected as Davidson said that both stais had excellent performances. He expected the runners to do well in the national meet adding that the philosophy of the program is to score if they compete in a national meet. Fishers points earned SUSC a tie for 13th place in the national tournament. Pillings finish was good for Alldredge leads team, earns top award BY KENNETH COX After graduating from Dixie High School, Alldredge one season before filling an played at Dixie College-foLDS mission. After coming back to Dixie, Alldredge pitched and played in the outfield. He was invited to attend school and try out for BYU and SUSC. After talking to the BYU coach about not being tried in the outfield, he called Coach Bill Groves and came to SUSC in winter quarter of 1985. Alldredge married his high school sweetheart, Micheline Pickett, and they now have two sons. The oldest will be two in September; the second son was were in Phoenix at born this spring while the the district tournament. Alldredge said that his wife called about 1 1 p.m. to tell him she was going to the hospital to have the baby, So I didnt get a whole lot of sleep until she called again about 2:30 and told me, then I was so excited I couldnt sleep for awhile longer. The son was born after Alldredge had hit the homer that advanced the passed Mesa. As an accounting major, he plans to someday become a certified public accountant, but he would maybe like to tryout for a major league team if he was given the chance. I cant think of doing any other job that Id like more, especially for the money. If you are playing major league baseball youre doing something that you love to do. Its like playing a game and getting paid for it. He says hell have to wait and consider all that is involved. Playing in the majors is something that he has dreamed of since he was a little boy, and he would like a chance. He said that his family is a consideration, and the kind of life they would be exposed to in the minor leagues, But Id always like to have that chance to advance and play in the majors. Alldredge is friends with Bruce Hurst, a St. George native that plays for the Boston Red Sox. He said he always tried to use the things that his coaches taught him but he never tried to pattern his play after anyone. A former coach from his senior league days, Kent Garrett, influenced Alldredge in the game of baseball. I really enjoyed how .he taught and coached the game, Alldredge said. Garrett coached Hurst in the youth program also and during the offseason Hurst comes back home and talks with their former coach for pointers and encouragement. The game of baseball has taught Alldredge two important lessons: A confidence in himself and to never give up. Never give up no matter how far down you are. Dont give up because you ar ' a loser if you give r Doug Alldredge transferred to SUSC from BYU because he wanted to play regularly on a baseball team, and he has. Alldredge started in the outfield since transferring and played in centerfield most of this season. Alldredge made the Cougars team as a pitcher, but felt he would do better if he could play all the time. He said he wanted to try playing every day because he likes to hit the ball. He came to SUSCs team hoping for a chance at that and got it. This year, his senior season, he led the in homeruns and was second in runs batted in and third in batting average as the posted the best season in the schools history. His accomplishments earned him Male Athlete of the Year and top baseball player honors at the SUSC sports banquet recently. Alldredge stroked 13 round tr.ppers to tie a school record that was set in 1976. One of the 13 home runs advanced the past Mesa College in the district tournament. Alldredge said, although he didnt do it often, he went to the plate hoping to hit this one out for the win, but after two strikes he choked up and just tried to make contact. The ball sailed over the leftfield wall the win that advanced them into and gave the the second round of the district playoffs. The went on to finish second, behind Grand Canyon. Alldredge grew up in St. George, the second of eight children, in an athletic family, his father was an allstater in football in high school. Alldredge started playing baseball when he was seven and although he tried other sports (Football and basketball) in junior high school, he played a single sport in high school: Baseball. Runner honored BY JANET CRAWFORD Senior marathon runner Jcilene Fisher is SUSCS Woman Athlete of the Year Vor 1986. I was really honored to represent SUSC, Fisher said. She has set and broken many records, but running will not be the higfest priority on her list now. She is planning a summer wedding with cyclist Matt De Waal. , According to Fisher, the NAIA National meet could be her last time on the track for quite a while. Im looking to win the 10,000 meters, Fishers said, Im going to go all out. She will also compete in the 5,000 meter race. Fishers involvement in running started during high school with a record in the half-milHer parents Joseph and Alice Fisher, were also actively involved in sports. Fisher said she couldnt have accomplished all the things she has without both the physical and emotional support of her parents. Currently, Fisher works out twice a day and runs an average of 1 1 miles per day. Last year she won the womens division of the St. George Marathon in record time, 2:43:27, breaking the old record by 38 seconds. Fisher is she gains experience from sports magazines and discussions with other athletes. According to Fisher, theres just something special about a marathon. No matter how many youve run, you always think you can improve your time. Immediately after the finish you swear youll never run another. But then, and its usually the same day, you start to feel you can beat your time on the next one. |
