Show The Thunderbird Softballers win bi-distri- BY KENNETH COX For the second time in three years the SUSC softball team is going to the national tournament. The Lady Birds, behind the pitching of Jill Jacobsen, who picked up two wins and one loss in the series, gained the trip by taking the tournament on the SUSC softball diamond. SUSC downed California Lutheran University in a three game downed Cal championship series Friday and Saturday. The rapped out 61 home runs this season on the way to the conference championship and district playoffs. Grand Canyon College downed the Thunderbirds to bring the best ever season to a close. The Grand Canyon victory eliminated the Bill Groves charges from the district playoffs. The used three pitchers but were unable to stop the third ranked team in the nation. Grand Canyon scored two runs in the second, three in the third, three in the fifth, two in the seventh, and one in the eighth for the championship. SUSC scored one in the fourth on a Rich Lundahl solo home run, then got three in the fifth, and one in the sixth on Mardy Benedicts solo shot, but that wasnt enough. record topping the old SUSC finishes the season with a mark of 21 wins. This is the first time the 'Birds have finished the season with more wins than losses. Doug Alldredges 13 home runs ties a record set by Kevin Jensen in the 70s.
