We met with the directors of Internships at the University of Utah and Brigham I I Student Center to Undergo Changes Its the weekend. Youve got a date or made plans to do something with your friends. Youve seen all the movies at the 'theatre, gone to too many dances lately, been to JBs one too many times, and just cant afford to spend a lot of money anymore. Does this sound familiar? Well, the new student administration understands this problem. To combat the weekend bluqs, the student government will introduce a hew kind of activity: the student center will not only be the place for traditional weekend dances, but it will be opened up to the showing of movies, live entertainment, dinners, refreshments and more. These evening programs will be at a Internships: A high-qualit- y Great Opportunity My philosophy is that students learn classrooms and are educated on the job. Internships provide that education. That statement was from a University of Utah political science student who went on an internship while in school. He is now an administrative assistant for a U.S. Congressman in Washington, D.C., making $68,000 a year. Internships have become a major part of the curriculum at many other colleges and universities throughout the nation. The internship experience in no way in very minimal cost and will be fashioned after the very successful USA for Africa dance. That is, a low admittance fee paid at the door covering entertainment, food, movies and dancing. This idea of ASSUSC President Stuart Jones will begin officially next fall, but you can look forward to seeing some activities of this type in May. The Student Center is a great hangout; it is centralized and very versatile. You will soon see the Student Center full of happenings at low prices. So if you've been hit with those blues, hang on. The Student Center will be the place to go on those boring, poor weekends. replaces the classroom, but the internship placements allow students to test and use what they have learned in the classroom, explore a potential career field, and develop skills fundamental to success in our society. The Internship Service will serve as a supplement to the Graduate Interview Program, which runs out of the Placement Center. While we were there we discussed the different options that we could take in getting students out into the real world to receive credit, and in many cases, compensation for doing so. We also met with Gov. Norman Bangerter and expressed to him our desire to have a student from SUSC as the student representative to the Utah State Board of Regents. Their committee meets every Thursday at 5 p.m. in the senate chambers. Those meetings are open to all students, and we encourage you to attend them. Alan Bailey, social affairs vice president, is working very hard to provide organized and quality activities here on campus. It was under his direction, along with the work of Darnea Mason, activities coordinator, and Kirk Bowden, director of public relations, that the marathon dance was so successful. We all appreciate the enthusiastic support of this event by the school and well as the community. This week is the commencement of Wild West Week under the direction of Lana Houston, director of clubs and organizations, and her committee. We A mid-Ma- y are looking forward to a very successful week. Marty Harris, special projects coordinator, has been very busy running the Student Book Exchange and is now directing the 10K Run. He will also be the administrator over the new Student Service Center. ASSUSC is proud to be working with the different arts on campus. For example, under the direction of Jeff Swindlehurst, United Arts Director, we helped sponsor the production of The Odd Couple. The Student Tenant Association continued to run strong with the efforts of Mark Morman, director of student affairs. He is currently updating the Student Tenant Association manual and is planning a fall workshop for all tenants. Countless hours spent by Brent Drew, controller, in controlling expenditures and assisting in budget planning has been appreciated. To help make ourselves more available to you as students, we have made several changes. First, each Executive Council member is required to spend at least 10 hours per week pursuing his or her responsibilities in the Student Center offices. These times are posted in the Student Center and will be printed in the newspaper. We also have chosen to have a secretary, Trixie Forsyth, who serves as the secretary for both Executive Council and Senate. She is on duty every day from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In this way we want to make ourselves available and, at the same time, encourage student involvement. To have a successful 1985-8year, believe it will take the efforts of all of us. It will mean the support of students in planning, carrying out, and attending (hose activities. We appreciate the enthusiasm that has been demonstrated thusfar and look forward to being of service to all of you. Tjiere are numerous committees and clubs that need student involvement.
