Coming up Black History Week set Civil rights activist James Meredith will participate in Black History Week activities scheduled to start today at SUSC. Meredith will deliver the colleges Feb. 21 Convocation lecture, his topic is Fighting for Freedom. The University of Cincinnati professor will also visit with several SUSC classes and student groups while he is on campus, according to Black History Week Coordinator Stuart Riley. Rev. France A. Davis, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, and Alberta Henry, president of the Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP, are other guest speakers. Davis will speak at 2 p.m. Monday and at 9 p.m. Tues. in the Thorley Recital Hall. His Mon. lecture, The Black Family in America, will deal with the black family as shaped by historical, cultural and economic factors. His second lecture, Literary and Visual Arts from a Black Perspective, will center on black literary and artistic achievements as a reflection of black culture. Blacks in Utah: Past, Present and Future is the title of Henrys Feb. 22 address which will start at 10 a.m. in the Thorley Recital Hall. The NAACP president has visited SUSC for previous black history week activities, said Bonnie Mitchell, director of the SUSC Center. Davis is a member of the Utah Endowment for the Humanities Speaker Bureau. His lectures will be partially sponsored by that organization. Henry is the founder of the Alberta Henry Foundation which provides scholarships for needy black students. Multi-Cultur- SUSCs Black History Week is being by the Black Student Center. Union and the Merideths Feb. 21 lecture is being cosponsored by the convocation committee. Black History Week activities also include an exhibit on black literary works and another, An African Tribute, which will be displayed all week in the main foyer of the college library. Another exhibit will be shown in the library special collections. The video Black Achievements in History will be among the films and videos scheduled to be shown Wed. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center Small Ballroom. Multi-Cultur- |
