This week they competed in the University of California Santa Barbara Invitational, where they finished second. This weeks female athlete of the week is Karen Smith, a member of the SUSC gymnastic team, from West Jordan, Utah. on the team, averages Karen, a Thunderbird gymnasts finished behind the host school with 150.65 points. Santa Barbara finished the meet in first place with 165.30 points. They scored us on the NCAA five point system, Coach Kathryn Berg said. Berg mentioned that on the NAIA system the team scored 123.15 points. Senior Karen Smith paced gymnasts with 31.00 points, followed by Jennifer Walke, 30.2 and Terri Sodja, who scored an even 30.00. According to Berg the scores were up in some events, while down in others. The judging was interesting, Berg said in reference to some of the scoring. SUSC will travel to California two more times this season for meets and in March will participating in the NAIA national meet in North Dakota. We have up and down periods. We are a great team in practice but for some reason we just cant put it together, Berg said. Ive never had a harder working group of girls, she added. SUSC will take this week off in preparation fo'r their next meet in California and according to Berg, We need it, we really need it. We are all really tired. Baseball season to open next week The SUSC baseball team will open the 1985 season a scant week and a half from now when they travel to San Diego for games against three schools. The Thunderbirds will open February 28 against the University of California at San Diego, followed by games against the University of San Diego and Point Loma College. The teams were opening up against will have already played fifteen games by then, Head Baseball Coach Bill Groves said. Theyll have a slight advantage, but weve had the opportunity to work out in St. George. That should make us feel right at home in San Diego, the first year head coach added. Groves is optimistic and confident about this years ball club. We will develop and get better as the season goes on, he said. According to Groves this years club is more team oriented than last years. They play very well together and theyre working very hard. Russell began the game against Colorado Mines with a slam dunk and ended it with 25 points. Fantastic job, Russ.
