The legislatures Joint Committee on Higher Education has already given initial approval on several budget items and is backing a legislative analysts recommended 4.1 percent salary equity increase for SUSC faculty. Michael D. Richards, vice president for college relations, reported to the Institutional Council Friday that actual salary increases, however, have yet to be determined. The equity increase is to bring SUSC salaries up to par with other state institutions. Whats holding everything up is a decision on flooding, Richards said. When the legislature decides what to do about the flooding, Im sure well know more on whats coming. The higher education committee has approved funding for several other of the colleges salary and operating expenses, Richards noted. In its 1985-8- 6 budget proposal, SUSC originally requested $689,000 for salary equity, which would have brought faculty salaries up about 10 percent. That request was cut in half by the state Commissioner of Higher Education last year in his recommendation to the state Board of .Regents. According to Richards, the legislative analyst is recommending a 4.7 percent salary increase for College of Eastern Utah, 3.9 percent for Utah Technical College Salt Lake, and 3.5 percent for Utah State and UTC Provo. The lowest recommended increase is for the University of Utah at .7 percent. The committee approved a payroll increase to e add 5.3 equivalent staff members to operate the physical plant, partly because of the addition of the Centrum. Because of a projected increase of 70 students next year, the legislative committee approved 3.5 e equivalent faculty and staff positions. Last year we were one of very few institutions that met increased enrollment projections, President Gerald Sherratt noted. The education committee will also forward approved increases for the colleges library acquisition budget and partial funding of SUSCs center. budget request for the Funding for SUSCs computer center also got committee approval, Richards said, noting that an additional operator is critically needed to handle two computers, a switching computer, and 250 student and faculty accounts. Richards said that committee approval for SUSCs capital facilities requests will not come until the legislatures capital facilities committee meets today. If the committee follows a legislative analysts recommendation, the college would only get $55,000 for land purchases, instead of the $375,000 recommended by the board of regents. The analysts recommendation echoes that forwarded by the state building board, Richards noted. The analyst is also recommending $1,344,000, the amount proposed by the regents, to fix problems caused by soil settlement on campus, although the state building board had asked that figure be trimmed to $734,000. Another $284,000 is also recommended for electrical upgrading, Richards noted. full-tim- full-tim- multi-cultur- ATTENTION CANDIDATES FOR ASSUSC POSITIONS: THE FOLLOWING DATES AND TIMES ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO REMEMBER TUESDAY FEB. 12 - DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY FORMS MUST BE TURNED INTO THE STUDENT CENTER SECRETARY BY 5:00 PM.
