The W is more correctly a staus, not a grade, provost Terry D. Alger indicated. It is the students job to officially withdraw from college. If students accomplish that before the end of the third week, no record of the course will occur. If they withdraw between the third and sixth week, a W will appear on their transcript. In addition, Alger noted that if a student withdraws totally from SUSC at any time during the quarter before final exams, a "W can be recorded. However, if a student stops attending classes without officially withdrawing, he will receive an E or a UW (unofficial withdrawal) for the course, both of which as failing grades.
