Softballers extend win streak Adrian by Sampson The Southern Utah State College women s softball team is on a rampage. Last week the Lady Birds won four games against nationally ranked Mesa College, boosting their record to an SUSC whipped Mesa by impressive 10-scores of 3 and 1. 4-- 3-- 1, 4-- 8-- 6. This weekend the team traveled to California for a couple of double headers. The Lady played La Verne College on Friday and Cal Riverside on Saturday. Scores of the games were unavailable at press time. Even with their impressive record the Birds are uncertain about their two opponents. I dont know about the California teams, says Coach Joy Peterson, they tend to have good pitching. Well be fortunate to have a split. Although weather conditions have hampered the teams chances of practicing on the field, they have managed to do well. The weather has been so unpredictable that weve had trouble getting the outside practice we need, Peterson said. We need to get outside to iron out some of the things that are hurting us. Things like misjudging fly balls and hobbling grounders are hard to correct when youre practicing in a gymnasium. Team batting and fielding averages are also impressive at .334 and .916 respectively. Senior Gwen Thomas leads the team in batting with a .643 average. Center fielder Patty Page has a .500 batting average, followed by pitcher first baseman Jennifer Smith at a .485 average. Completing the over .400 club is Jana Crawford at .400. The team pitching has also been exceptionally good according to Peterson. Smith, a former member of the Canadian Junior National team, has won all five of her pitching starts, and saved two. Senior hurler Becky Peterson has won all four of her pitching starts followed by Denise Muir with a one win, one loss record. Southern Utah State will host the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Womens Softball championships this year and Peterson is optimistic about the teams chances of success. If we continue to play well I think we will win the RMAC championships. Having them here will make it easier for us, she said. This week the Lady will play at home against Brigham Young tomorrow, and New Mexico H:ghlands University on Friday and Satu ny. |
