Show Page 14 The Thunderbird Monday December 5, 1983 Overall, SUSC melodramas not bad (continued from page 11) rules presented by the emcee requested that no objects be thrown, McKay feels the audience simply wasnt sure how to react. We were expecting your basic rowdy audience, adds Lunt, but the crowd seemed somewhat Warren Holz seemed to have more than a bit of trouble with his lines as the beleaguered writer. He didnt appear actually comfortable speaking in Magees somewhat stilted vocabulary, and for most of the play he came across as a wooden personality reciting lines. His love at first sight" with heroine Gayhene Crawford just doesnt get off the ground and Cohan never really supplies a strong motivation for Magees obsession with the number of keys to the resort. Holz does much better in the second act and so do the rest of the actors, w ho finally have some juicy dramatic bits to play with. The action is quicker, humor is broader and everyone can get on with the fun. Heather DeSart steals the show as a manipulating Gloria Swanson like blackmailer swathed in her black ostrich feathers and tuxedo dress Todd Dayley has a hermit who snarls at ball as the woman-hatinsince the low-ke- g Eii youngs Chorale show is set everyone in sight while Robbie Reid looks like a pugnacious Lou Costello and Phillip Bush ell is adorable as a cringing, neurotic little muscle man. Scene designer David McMurtne deserves a large helping of praise for his atmospheric, uncluttered and set. Kudos must also go to very professional-lookincostume designer Debra Caliva and makeup designer Darrell Phillips. The dresses, period hats, flapper cosmetics and gangster suiting all make for a believable visual appeal. John Waters looks particularly not gentleman convincing as a dignified an easy effect to achieve in studio theatre. Overall, for an evening of light entertainment, the show isnt bad. In spite of the slow pacing and a few minor technical flaws, like misfiring cap guns, the general audience leception looked very favorable, and both directors expect more enthusiastic review's after the rough edges are smoothed out, which McKay feels might have been done sooner if she had been able to work more with her cast Most plays are given four weeks rehearsal time, this one had only three because so many cast members were involved in other departmental productions.
