Show Page 10 The Thunderbird Thursday January 27, 1983 Birds ambush Cowboys to remain unbeaten at home The Southern Utah State College Thunderbirds kept their home court winning streak alive Monday night by defeating the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys The win keeps the in hot contention for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship as they now move into the crucial part of the 983 basketball season. It also moves them a half game into first place ahead of the University of Southern Colorado. The Thunderbirds kept up with a furious pace set by the Cowboys who used a press for most of the game The key word was probably depth for the Thunderbirds. They used superior bench strength to run a to defense of their own with coach T om McCracken going to his bench numerous times to replace the five on the court with five fresh players. "You haved to play a lot of people to play that kind of defense," he said. The fell behind 0 in the early moments before sparking and igniting the fire on offense. Midway through the game they found themselves on the top end of a 1 margin, shooting 64 percent from the field. The second half was as furiously paced as the first with the Cowboys relying on outside shooting as the remained as tough as ever on defense. The final six minutes of the contest saw the Cowboys score an amazing 48 points and threaten to pull within striking distance of the lead. As it turned out though, the Thunderbirds maintained the lead and at no time appeared to be concerned about the Cowboys comeback attempt aT-Bir- 45-3- . Lady Birds sweep pair of games from New Mexico schools The Lady swept a pair of games this past week over Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands. In Saturdays game against Western New Mexico, the Lady notched a decisive 2 victory. In the game, which was for the most par a affair, Coach Boyd Ado-n- s played all 3 SUSC players. T e Lady Mustangs of Western New Me- :o netted just four first half field goa as SUSC pulled away to a 3 half' me lead. Four Lady scored in dc uble figures as a balanced scoring atta along with an aggressive defense 72-5- one-sid- ed 1 - 37-2- was too much for the overmatched Lady Mustangs. The vii,iury Droke a two game SUSC losing string and puts the Lady back in the conference race. SUSC was led by center Paula Burgoynes 1 3 points. Guards Gwen Thomas and Mary Sharp each added 1 1 points and forward Lisa Stolk scored 1 0. Western New Mexicos top scorers were Cecelia Martinez and Chris Azua, each with nine points. In Mondays contest, the Lady were out to prove that they belong in the conference race with a hard fought win over New Mexico Highlands. The Lady posted the win with a balanced scoring attack led by guards Thomas and Sharp joining center Paula Burgoyne all with 1 6 points apiece. Just three minutes into the game, starting forward Lisa Ballantyne went out with an injured shoulder. In her brief playing time, she chipped in four points. Eventhough the Lady Cowboys shot well in the first half, they could not overcome a tenacious SUSC defense which forced 3 turnovers against New Mexico Highlands as the Lady 1 took a 41 32 lead into the locker room at the half. -- The tempo of the game stayed much in favor of SUSC until the seven minute mark when the Lady were 2 and saw a 1 0 point lead turn into a three point advantage. The maintained their Lady composure to outscore the Lady Cowboys 1 1 0 over the final four minutes of play. SUSC has now upped their conference record to 3 as they travel to Adams State Friday, Jan. 28 and Fort Lewis Saturday, Jan. 29. outscored 9-- 7-- 5-- |
