Show Page 4 The Thunderbird Thursday January 27, 1983 Campaigning workshop slated for students today To help kick off the upcoming student body in February a student symposium will take place today at noon in the Thorley Recital Hall on effective campaigning. Mike Leavitt, the campaign manager for Orrin Hatch, Jake Game and Dan Marriott, will be speaking on what is involved with campaigning, how to be a successful campaigner and what his personal experiences have been. The lecture should prove beneficial for political sicence students and those who will be involved in the student elections as well elections as interesting to everyone, according to Jeff Maxwell, an ASSUSC senator. Leavitt, a native of Utah, grew up in Cedar City and graduated from SUSC in business. Presently he is living in Salt Lake City where he works for his father at Dixie Insurance, a profitable and large business which operates in several other states besides Utah. Leavitts first experience with campaigning began when his father ran for the position of governor in the mid 1 970 elections. The race was close and Dixie was defeated by a narrow margin. It was during this time that Leavitt learned the ropes of the game and went on to become a successful and highly sought after campaign manager. Maxwell described Leavitt as being hard working and friendly, a man who greatly enjoys being actively involved with people. As a speaker he is very motivational and dynamic with a good sense of humor. The lecture is free and open to all. This should be a good opening event for our student body elections," said Maxwell. Anxiety workshops slated Anxiety is something we all it helps us by keeping us alert or even on guard if our life situation demands it. Some anxiety is often pleasurable and may be sought by going to exciting movies or engaging in sports. What can be more exciting than a fast run down a ski slope on a beautiful day? As long as we feel in control its exciting but if we feel a loss of control, excitement quickly becomes anxiety as we approach the big pine tree. We can easily have too much anxiety when events are perceived as threatening to our sense of well being and we feel we have lost control. College with its many tests and evaluations by others may become the kind of an experience. Anxiety that prevents our functioning in an efficient in the classroom is too high. But, happily, it can be brought under our control. The Counseling Center will begin a workshop designed to help students gain the skills to control high levels of anxiety that prevent them from doing their best in classes. Once the ability to control uncomfortable levels of anxiety is obtained, the student can avoid other maladaptive behaviors that are anxiety mediated in other areas of their life. The first session will begin on Wednesday Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center. The week features a dance in the large ballroom at 9 p.m. Wednesday. The clubs weekly mini-mark- et K if Week meeting will be at 5 p.m. In the Life Science building, room 1 20. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to attend.
