years leaving two wives and a numerous 0 posterity to mourn his bis departure BOSTON oct 1886 editor deseret news here I 1 am at the hub the cita of bunker hill and baked beans I 1 have seen bunker hill monument but the baked beaus beans are a luxury of the future boston is quite a large city but it would be a great deal lar larger er if it was all straightened out the fifis hiilis flattened and the streets made a convenient width I 1 what little sidewalks they have manyo 0 them about three feet wide have the stones all corrugated on the surface so that it il is like walking over a couble pavement I 1 suppose this is done in the interest of the shoemakers THE population OP oi BOSTON according to the last jast census is just think of people navine having to walk through all these narrow crooked streets up hill and down on a three toot loot corrugated sidewalk it I 1 be done and consequently most of toem take toe the cars which run raa everywhere on some of the te corners where eight or ten streets run in together the rails make a network of very very intricate pattern as they twist and turn to the angular I 1 saw a man on sunday looking looking at some prints in a window it was a fine ne display but he be had to go every one who passed had bad to press him up against tho th wall or drop off over the curbstone and it was literally wearing him out ithe if be had bad staid there much longer he be would not have had a raz ra to his back the first KE FEATURE that struck k me on app approaching ro aching boston was the peculiar drawling tone in which the conductor called out the names of the various stati stations ofis the next was what you might call a bob bobtailed omnibus a sort of two wheeled vehicle drawn by one horse antei entered ed from the rear and with seats on each side as in other busses the driver sits outside in the cold in in front and looks very lonesome but there arede are degrees of suffering and lie he ought to feet thankful when he be looks up at the hansome fa ansome cub cab driver who is perched up in the air behind his cart and basto drive over the heads of his bis invisible passengers he gets all the wind there is both ways and if he be should take a header cheader backwards it would be certain death then there is efte the mechanical cash boy employed in the stores arid and hotels the cashier sits in a central position on an elevated seat fenced round with wire latticework lattice work as in a cage over his head running to the various departments are wires these wires have little boxes suspended on pulleys that run along the wire and the clerk instead of calling cash simply puts the money and the figures of the purchase in a the box and touching a lever a coiled spring sends the box and contents to the cashier ier who in like manner returns the change I 1 believe there is a passage of scripture e somewhere ome where that says man was made u glit but buthe he has sought out many i inventions 11 on saturday night I 1 went so see ADONIS a sort of burlesque extra extravaganza vaga anz 9 1 and as it is a verv excellent thing 01 of the kind and not soon to reach salt lake city perhaps I 1 had better kive give a brief account of it it was played in the hollis street theatre which was orice once a church it resembles our theatre except that it is plainer and much smaller 1 I dont know whether the people here axe are going coins to turn any more of their churches into theartres theatres the atres or hot j but bt tob the dev devote ats fes of pleasure are 7 evidently in the ascendant for I 1 noticed several theatres theartres the atres in f oil full blast with crowded vestibules vesti bules on sunday on entering the hollis hollid street theatre I 1 was given a check as usual except that it contained one of the letters of the alphabet indicating the tier of seats anda number denoting the seat in toe the tier punctually on irime it a gong clanged 8 sharply three times aud before the echo had fairly died away the music of the orchestra began with a grand crash introduce introducing occasionally the ethiopian bones by way of variety it was lively music and well played PLOT OV OF THE BURLESQUE was a very simple one A sculptress chiseled adorns adonis in marble and then brought him to life but so many ladies sought his baud band in such devious ways and the world was so BO much worse than he be he had fondly imagined that he eventually at his own rf quest ass turned to stone again upon this mis thread is hung one of the liveliest burlesques I 1 ever witnessed there are bongs and dances without number and comical tumbling till you cant rest in the tumbling instead of the usual tights they have something rid ic ulous on and instead of standing in statuesque attitude and waiting for the applause the ithe last manin mandu man in breaks up the pyramid or whatever is being fored form id and they go rolling around the stage in incongruous CONFUSION dropping dro p p ng unexpectedly astride each othe others r necks ecks and in other ridiculous positions altogether foreign to the usual solemn and stately procession of tumblers t lers seen in the circus and elsewhere then the father of the pretty milkmaid I 1 is a I 1 imitation of Coul dock in hazel M kirke ike 11 and to see him come into one of odthe the most frolicsome scenes and begin snaking his bis gray hair and turning his daughter off is too lou comical for anything another a la in the piece imitates the english actor irving who was recently here and sings a sidesplitting side splitting sons song called its english you know there is much of the pantomime much to la the dress and scenery that is there are well drilled troops of amazons in glittering mau mail troops of jani janiz zaries arles with oriental costumes two of ballet dancers la various styles of costumes and japs and others too numerous to mention it Is full of sarcasm and nd puns pans and keeps the audience in a continual smile from begin ing 1 ug to end to show how bow it is appreciated it had bad deen been played some nights in new york before it came here of coarse the central figure 11 is the handsome dixey the statue who is seen by calcium light upon his pedestal as white its as marble ati at the opening and close of the piece and who is the lile life of the play as it proceeds opens the ball by dancing a lively clog dance upon his pedestal when first brought to life I 1 stopped one day IN CANADA that paradise of defaulting cashiers and while there the follow following lug indigent ind ident occurred in a toronto court which to show that if cashiers are wel coined with open arms yet it is a very poor place for dogs the charge of shooting sho otin off a firearm was admitted by wm win hall at the police 0 court yesterday he said he be bad ad shot at a dog which was attacking his chi children dren 4 right said the court did the animal die right off no your worship Is it dead now no I 1 missed it then you ought to be fined any man who will shoot at a dog and not kill it should be punished As you were defending your children however the case will be dismissed this time take better aim in future I 1 always had bad an idea that boston was the most crowded city in t union but it is getting left in barici a wa ways S chicago contains more ceoil Is ananew and new york takes lakes the icare for ti number to the square anile ina in a speech delivered on tuesday last on the occasion of his nomination as a candidate forstthe mayoralty of new york henry george called attention to the terribly crowded state of that city london he be said has a population of tp the square mile canton in overcrowded china has to the square mile while new york taking all its area his has a population of to the square mile and leaving out the uninhabited portions in one ward there is a population of to the square mile in another in another and in each case roads squares squar ei and open spaces are included in the area mentioned there is one block irk in the city which ordinarily contains 2500 inhabitants and every living room in it is also a workroom work room another covering a quarter of an acre contains on an average 1 1350 people at that j ate a 6 square aare mile would contain tte the result of this overcrowding is a terribly high rate of mortality espeli among district it is said that 90 per cent of the children die before they arrive at the age of live five years this is truly a fricht frightful ful state of affairs I 1 have written enough lor for once you may hear from me again before I 1 leave av au revoir Q G 3 T correspondence A PI VISIT the lehi iehl choir take a trip to span teb lab forik LEHI oct 25 1886 editor deseret news A few months ago a visit was paid the people this place sn the dinst for the purpose of holding a conference and to transact such business as pertains to their labors in the ministry on our arrival here we met the elders belonging in this district who located us among the saints for the night where we were kindly entertained ta ined for which we felt grateful next morning we met at the appointed place for in meeting eiting which was as a vacated house bouse in a deserted saw mill town 11 which had been conveniently venie lattia fitted for the occasion at 10 am a m meeting was called to older ol 01 der by president wm win sprig april who after the usual exercises sta stated ed the object of our meeting together and exhorted the congregation to LAY ASIDE PREJUDICE that may exist amona them and pay ay strict attention to the teachings they they would hear if they desired to learn thines pertaining to eternal life and ane plan of salvation which was marked out and laid down for our guidance by our lord and savior jesus christ the conference lasted two days and peace and good order prevailed during the entire proceedings the discourses of the several speakers were dictated by the spirit ol 01 god the influence of which was made imide manifest to all present our meetings were well attended though composed comp obed mostly of saints who were very much encouraged and manifested a determination to contain the blessings in store for the righteous THE WEBE RE ALSO AIZO encouraged ty by the instructions received one from another and with the success which has attended their labors in the past and the favorable prospect a glorious work to be done in the near future each returning to his field of Is labor with a more determined et zeal to spread the gospel of truth and righteousness and gather the honest to the place designed tor for them by the lord that they may escape the judgments that he is about to pour out lout upon all nations the weather has been delightful here for some time past which readers it favorable for gathering crops which are not as good as usual though better than expected owing to the protracted rains during the spring and the ed drought rought which followed THE HEALTH OF THE ELDERS and saints is good and a good emigration from thib part is looked forward to we see by the papers that satan and his emissaries are still working their nefarious schemes in the vain oops of finally overthrowing rowing the work of the lord the brethren suffering incarceration have the sympathy of the elders and saints in this part and our prayers are that they may have strength sufficient to endure the persecutions that are unjustly heaped upon them by wicked ad aad ungodly men praying for the welfare lof of zion and the final triumph of truth and righteousness ous ness I 1 remain your brother fl in u the gospel I 1 i HEBER C C RICH correspondence MT ROZELL limestone co ala october 18 1886 editor deseret news hews many items of interest occur to a person when traveling among the people in this country preaching and talk ing about the principles of our religion this interest is undoubtedly more noticeable while one is i becoming initiated into missionary labor than after an experience of a number of months or years the excitement that accompanies the summons to labor of this kind continue until realities are reached stimulated with the adieus adicus
