Show GOVERNOR WEST HONORED A BRILLIANT RECEPTION TO EXECUTIVE the reception ball giyen given by the municipal government in honor of his excellency governor west equalled equal led in brilliance anything anyta ins of the kind that has ever taken place in this city when the short time allowed the various committees to iDer perform form their work is considered one is led to marvel that so complete and successful an affair could have been arranged great credit is due the mayor the council the city officers and others who labored so ao energetically ergeti cally to bring about such a gratifying result the theatre had been handsomely handsome V decorated for the occasion manager H B clawson taking an active part in fitting up the interior the ball bail floor was set for twenty sets A platform for the musicians was placed at the south end of the auditorium and just above them in the centre of the first circle the sixteenth ward brass baud was stationed the dancing music was supplied by a band of selected performers from the theatre and opera house orchestras led by professor weihe with james currie as prompter over the proscenium depending from the flies and extending the whole width of the stage was a large green banner on which was wrought with ann flowers the words welcome governor west the two stalls to abe 8 left were converted into a dais carpeted and set vita furniture and adorned with plants la to and flo flowers were over all was wa C draped ped b in tasteful style the stare and stripes surmounted at the by a gold eagle on the front worked in flowers were two shields bearing respectively ively the words kentucky and utah 7 his excellency governor west entered the ballroom ball room at about half past 8 where hundreds of guests were assembled the throne thron rapidly increased and the blaze 0 of lights playing u upon on fair women and brave men decked decked out in all the rich and gorgeous colors of the rainbow and moving hither bither aud and thither was splendid in the extreme the members of the various committees wore handsome badges of various hued ribbons lettered with gold As each arrival entered he or she was presented with a pro gramme and ushered to the dressing rooms by atten attendants attendant dan ts in waiting the rear of the sta stage stae e was closed in and reserved for the refreshment buffet arbogast and gallagher being the efficient caterers cateress cater ers soon after the governors arrival mayor armstrong called the assembly to order and elder B H roberts offered up a prayer the grand march then formed led of by governor west having as his bis partner mrs john W taylor the regular pro gramme of dancing was continued until 10 when a lull occurred and the interlude provided took place the band played a fine selection and treasurer 0 F whitney who had been chosen to deliver the address of w welcome elcome to governor west stepped upon the platform where his stepped excellency ibel lency was seated with judge zane and others and spoke as follows governor west the pleasant duty has been placed upon me of extending to you in behalf of the municipal government ern ment a formal welcome to the city of salt lake and to this entertainment which friendly hearts and willing hands bands have bave provided for your enjoyment and that of your friends permit us to express the hope that the present ocea occasion is only one the initial of many man scenes brighter and happier still which whick await us in the f future the citizens of salt lake have for you the kindliest kind liest feelings and best of wishes that your administration may shine with success tha fryou may win the love arid and respect of the whole people and that the almighty mig aty giver of every good may bless 1 and bestow upon you yon from time to time the wisdom and intelligence necessary to the faithful discharge of the duties and responsibilities of your high office may your career be fraught with peace and prosperity both to yourself and the people you are sent to govern again in behalf of my fellow citizens I 1 tender you a hearty welcome A hearty round of applause rang through the building as the speaker closed and governor west who had risen on be being 1 ing addressed was introduced to the assembly by mayor armstrong and responded as follows mr mayor ladies and gentlemen I 1 am exceedingly grateful for this large gathering here this evening to do me honor in incoming coming among you to take an official station I 1 am sure that while the music we have listened to has been charming and delightful there has been to my heart more exquisite and dear strains those that I 1 have received in the welcome from the people that I 1 am to live amongst officially from their gathering here from their hospitable faces we see their encouraging looks and more than all which ever comes to tile true americans heart to give him courage for every duty that is imposed upon him the lovely smile ot women we know that frequently frequent when soldiers are drawn up in battle that the strains of martial music will 11 nerve them to deeds of daring and an to feats of valor but it seems to me that at if upon some great occasion when men were desired to do some great deed they were inspired and encouraged by the smiles of women it would have more and greater effect than all the martial I 1 strains from all the instruments that have ever been anven invented ted now the speaker that has hidden bidden me welcome h has asked for me wisdom that I 1 may do my duty in the official station to mak which w ich I 1 am called 1 I too look to tile the giver of all wisdom to enlighten my mind to strengthen my heart and to give me nerve to do faithfully and honesty my duty Is as the representative of the majesty of the law A applause lause and here I 1 pledge myself fat Vally to do de that in all honor under the law applause mr mayor the authorities of ef salt Lake ladies and gentlemen from a great ful heart beardi I 1 return you my most sincere thanks the applause which followed was loud and prolonged after music by the band the marine drill by twenty four little girls was executed under age the direction of mr fred clawson and evoked the most enthusiastic applause having presented arms to tile governor who seemed greatly delighted at the spectacle the little marines formed two lines up the stage between which the governor escorting miss beaule caine and followed by a hundred other couples filed into the green room where refreshments were served the music and dancing continued
