may incite you with the high purpose of working to the end that during your administration utah may take a long step forward in the path where duty leads that her prosperity pros prosperity gerity may distinguished predecessor to welcome me to your splendid territory my trip to the west r has been one of unalloyed una noyed pleasure for I 1 have seen so many evidences of thrift and enterprise that it has been like a revelation to me I 1 stopped at omaha and was surprised to see the monuments erected as evidences of commercial success and untiring indestad ind industry ustad I 1 was delighted to see the towns that hat had sprung up all alon along my route which mark the lr progress ogress made an fn in the interest of american institutions and I 1 was particularly glad when I 1 crossed the utah line to note the e contrast between your territory and the one which I 1 had just left I 1 saw evidences of thrift and industry which pleased and delighted me I 1 ws further pleased leased when I 1 received the telegrams from to governor vernor thomas and the mayor of salt lake city informing me that this warm welcome awaited me you must know how grateful this is to a stranger I 1 left warm close dear friends in my native home and coming so tar far away you may imagine that I 1 came with some feeling of trepidation as to how by wh whom chmand mand and under what circumstances I 1 would be met but this royal welcome to your borders leaves no no room for doubt as to its sincerity god giving me the ability to act I 1 shall serve you well applause this welcome was not wholly unexpected tor for houi fame for hospitality pita lity is world wide with the untold wealth in your mines with your magnificent snow capped mountains towering to the clouds with a population of souls with good government and law abiding citi dens zens with your genial climate your untiring and unceasing industry your destin destiny cannot now be spoken but its glory a and achievements will eventually be with a musical performance there was considerable cordial handsh akings and interchanges of kindly expressions on the platform and finally his excellency was conducted to one of the cars for some time before the train moved he maintained a standing between hon W W riter and secretary thomas those gentlemen introducing a large number of citizens to him as they passed down the aisle of the car BACK TO SALT LAKE LA E during the trip to salt lake governor west was conducted through the other cars and introduced to the ladies of the party of welcome on the train the mayor and city council tendered to the governor a reception to be given at the salt lake theatre tomorrow to morrow evening which he accepted this city was reached shortly after nine A large number of people had gathered at the depot awaiting the arrival and the ward band struck up some lively airs the governor was conducted to the walker house where he will stay for the present the crowd in front ot ol the hotel was very large after the ward band had played several airs in response to loud load calls governor west made macle his appearance on the balcony accompanied by W C hall hail and J B walden the former introducing him to the people governor west delivered the follow ng address FELLOW CITIZENS having come to you a stranger this sea of upturned faces this cordial welcome with which I 1 am met in your oar capital city fills my heart with gratification fi uon and pleasure but your hospitable fame had prompted me to expect a kindly welcome the strangers that I 1 have met and those whose accounts I 1 have read lead of visiting your territory have ever e cr spoken lix in highest terms of your hospitality they have spoken your praise braise they have described your beau beautiful tifa L city with its gardens of fruit trees with its lovely homes surrounded by this beautiful range of snow capped mountains they have told how the pure waters water flow down from those snow capped mountains upon each side of your beautiful avenues and alid streets they have spoken of the enterprise of your citizens and of the magnificence of your city in which the stranger meets a hospitable welcome and is is
