And the value was never more obvious than in the fourth quarter when Utah overcame a New Mexico lead to snatch a 5 victory. New Mexicos kicker does not have much range distance. Utahs Dan Marrelli is a beyond the extra-poigood bet to connect from anywhere around 35 yards. What fllowed was d pre nightmare for an and for those involved with his fortunes Among other 35-2- 0 33-3- things, Lamomca was sacked five times, intercepted four times and penalized twice for the grounding intentionally ball And three times, as he knelt to hold the ball for a George Blanda place kick, Dave Dalbvs snap from center sailed past him Marrelli kicked field goals of 24 and 34 yards in the kick which went Saturday victory, but an extra-poin- t wide actually won the ball game After Don Van G alder had passed to Roosevelt Hutchins to tnm the deficit to Utah went for the safer kick for the one point. But the kick was wide. 35-2- New Mexico was penalized for offside on the kick attempt (which may have caused the attempt to be wide) and the penalty gave Utah the ball on the line instead of the three. Steve Marlowe then plunged over for two points, which cut the margin to seven and set the stage for the two-p- o nt pass conversion which won the game. But New Mexico may only wonder what would have happened had the Marrelli kick been good, with the penalty, which meant Utah would have taken the orr point converand then been forced into going for the two-posion later just to lie. Its the little things which win or lose ball games and make the coaches turn to tinting their hair before age changes the color. Needed Field Goal The lack of a field goal kicker with range really hurt the Lobos. 0 Leading early in the fourth quarter, New Mexico recovered a Van Galder fumble on the Utah 37. The Lobos picked up six yards in two rushes, but the second drew a penalty, so instead of being mside the 30 the Lobos were on the 47. 35-2- Again they drove back, getting to the Utah 23, before a holding penalty set them back to the 45. That would have meant a record field goal attempt and only teams with the best would have tried a goal then. But after Utah had scored and picked up the two points. New Mexico drove agam and Utahs defense held on its 29, fourth and four. That would have been a worthwhile gamble on a field goal, with a good kicker, but instead the Lobos tned to run the ball ar.d came up two yards short. A field goal, if successful, would have put the Lobos m front, with four minutes to play. But the kick wasnt called and Utah took over and drove 73 yards to 38-2- score and win the game Utes Rallied Forces The mark of a good football team is its ability to win when it isnt playing its best, and Utah showed a lot of poise and maturity in coming back Saturday in the face of an aroused New Mexico team. Normally, New Mexico has not been a good team this fall, as its record shows. But Saturday, the Lobos started the game in the best "physical condition since the start of the season, and the fumbles whicn set up a 14-- 0 lead gave the squad the juice it needed. Utah had to fight back and the fact Van Galder was of the field in two able to move the club three-fourth- s minutes Is a good fact to remember. Utah did this with its best running back, Ike Spencer, on the sideline and with Steve Odom playing with a nagging injury. It is much better to win a sloppy victory than it is to lose a game, as some philosopher once said. point-blan- - ff ft uhWfi nrff ,J T nftvir iiY 49er rookie quarterback Joe Reed learns hard way as he is dropped V Associated Press Wirephoto Skins Down Vikings Clinch Tie For Central Title The Minnesota defense was superb as the Vikings won their ninth straight game of the season and their 12th over the Lions, dating back to 1968 on the two and ran m for the score with 1 28 left in the half Gilliam, Fran Tarkenton's favorite receiver all day, caught four passes for 102 yards and a TD in the second half.
