Show The Salt Lake 1 ribtine, Monday. March 26, 137:! 1 r 3 Symphony, Utah Chorale Join in Superb Rendition of Requiem 1 By Irene Jones It was sad that not more were present to hear the masterpiece. Although biled as a sellout (all symphony concepts are) those attending could hardly be called a capacity crowd. Tribune Staff Writer It would be nard to find a more beautiful presentation of Berloizs Requiem than the one given Saturday night m the Salt Lake Tabernacle by the Utah Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Chorale. The requiem begins with a soft, sweet prayer sung by the chorus. In Latin, the Lord is asked to grant those who hae passed on eternal rest and Soft accompaniment peace from the orchettra emphasizes the plea The requiem has been rearfor by composers ranged centuries, but Berloiz, with brass and voices, added makes the mass a firey, deepl- y spiritual prayer A After a delicate soprano beginning, the second movement rises in strength, reaching its height when the orchestra takes oer with rolling kettle drums, heralding brass and a fury of sound from bass sections It was this movement that was most spectacular SaturThe additional day night brass strategically placed in the Tabernacle, mixed with the beautiful soprano voices from the choir, and the con stant drum rhythm, sent chills through listeners Maurice Abravane', symphony music director, is at his best when dueeting such spirited movements. His ever-surbaton urged the v oiccs and instruments to their capacity, drawing every ounce of power and feeling from the all performers e Walker, well known Berloiz soloist, and substitute for an ailing Charles Bressler, gave a sol.mn. yet Malloy e tender rendition of "Sanctus, a movement praising God His was excellent performance and Bressler fans were elated kpm The Utah Chorale, singing the entire mass in Latin, easily earned the hearty applause offered before intermission and at the conclusion The group's dedication and experit Wul be tise are featured April 21 when the Orchestra Symphony presets the Book of Mormon Oiatono m the Salt Lake Tabernacle at Tabernacle at n The Utah Sy concert production! May IB at S p m m the Tabernacle Great Singer Marty Robbins Still in Top Form By David L. Beck Tribune Staff Writer do it The lesson of Sinatra is that a popular singer sings words first of all What makes Robbins a great singer and Bob Sykes just the guy who To lay a big flopping prejudice out on the table, I don't think Marty Robbins can sing a song badly. Any song Saturday night at the Salt Palace he was even good enough to overcome a pickup orchestra Guy Lomtrying to sight-reabardo arrangements. does harmony with Marty Robbins, is that Robbins has learned to put his voice at the service of the story he is telling. It isnt easy. His songs are complicated. Rolling Stone, reviewing a Robbins record, once admitted that there simply isnt a rock singer around with the control to sing Robbins songs Take, for example, the line I from Tonight Carmen: find while I'm waiting, Theres no time for hating, While anticipating The woman Ive wanted so much That has to be sung in one" breath, while the stair-lik- e melody descends into the lower register where the air rushes out as from a ruptured balloon d Its hard to believe Robbins has been around as long as he A White Sport Coat has was a hit in 1956 but the same thing has happened to Robbins voice that happened to Sinatra's With age it has grown bigger, and deeper and fuller in the lower register Sinatras trouble was that by the time he had the voice he always wanted, he had lost the breath control to use it. The phrases tlrt once were effortlessly joined became clipped, and his arrangements had to be accordingly. adjusted Toward the end he was singing right on the beat, like a rock singer, where once he floated over it. Great Singer What Im saying is that Robbins can sing just about anything, and has. He can do the Sinatra stuff beautifully; Smatra could never sing El Paso. Good Control Robbins doesnt have that trouble, at least not yet. In spite of the altitude, which occasionally left him breathless, in spite of the open heart surgery that nearly left him dead a couple of years ago, his control is as good as ever. Maybe better Robbins has a beautiful voice, but that alone wouldnt His triumph Saturday night paniment apaparently necessitated using local talent for the first half of the show, too. It wasnt all bad The KSOP W'ranglers are a mediocre group, but the bassist is good and the guitar player, Perry Westfall, is remarkably adept Roy Dee, an Ogden mechanic who sang a couple of songs, has a voice like Dave Dudleys, only better, and with a good arranger could do something. But thats beside the point. They dont belong on the same bill with Marty Robbins. You dont hire gene Jelesmk to warm up the crowd for Isaac Stern. Lur HOitiiLar 4th CUmmI-APRI- NU was all the more impressive because of the accompaniment economics forced on him. He is expensiv The promoters apparently feared they would take a bato on the show if they had to pay for a Lac-ku- p group, too, not to mention other acts. So they hired a local group, tossed the sheeet music at them and said Play the results Predictably, were awdul But for most of the evening Robbins kept their interference at a minimum The same economic woes that dictated Robbins accom- JUNIORS - SI50 CHILDREN S TS 9:30 TONIGHT 7:00 NO RESERVED SEATS ura t:mr tilicc atjs; cimri PAUL NEWMAN Planetarium Show juscu the Un"Springtime iverse is the title of the new' star program at the Hansen of Planetarium, 15 S.
