X X X i! Lehi Guys, Im just one of you. Im better or no worse. Lets remember that the rest of the season because, without your support, Im nothing and this team is nothing. Since Bruce Hardy was a sophomore his name and Bingham athletics have become one in the same. If he has a bad day on the football field or the basketball floor, if is news because it is not expected. If he has one of his usual good days, it is written up accordingly. Hardy seems like just another shy high school student when you talk to him. He would probably go unnoticed if he wasnt such a fine athlete. Bruce has been marked since his first league start as a sophomore, says Miner basketball coach George Sluga. Coaches who play against us recognize his ability, his good attitude and his willingness to play for the team and they can see nothing but trouble. Coaches have recognized his talent. Football mentors devised various defenses to guard against his passing attacks while basketball coaches have used zones to sag in on him. But, from a coaching standpoint, how do you handle a star like Bruce without hurting other members of a Payson Uintah 0 It .909 .818 63 818 664 542 455 455 273 .273 000 703 650 583 563 523 739 625 seven REGION 612 585 715 631 Chad Eckhart Wins Events 674 814 no Bountiful Swims to State Title Division Two Piute Escalante Panguitch Brvce Valley Volley 6 5 5 1 .750 2 2 2 6 6 .143 .143 589 436 333 477 390 562 REIONG NINE Closs X Morgan XX Grantsville Wasatch Union intermountam Summit Manila S Rich S Summit N Rich N 0 0 1 6 000 .833 .500 .143 .000 588 469 350 .857 .857 .333 .333 484 431 323 356 413 377 494 494 Closs Division One 6 471 323 317 297 363 415 369 347 402 particular team. By Tom Wharton Tribune Sports Writer A quiet swimmer named Steve Quinn wore a steel hat as he walked around the University of Utah Natatonum cheering his Eountiful teammates 10 a state high school swimming championship. Quinn took his hat off to swim three times Saturday. The first time he took it off, he helped his relay team tie a state record in the medley relay. The second time, he broke a record in the freestyle. The final time, Quinn tied the d Second Straight Quinns efforts led the to Braves their second straight high school swimming championship as they edged Granger, despite havfreeing a first place style relay taken away on a disqualification. Winning state like mis made all the effort worthwhile, said Quinn who is a senior. 211-17- Winning Games Important XX Berth Hardy talked quietly about himself the othei day at Bingham as he waited to play in a game and his comments show the mind of a mature individual who has learned to cope with the glory and problems that come from being a star athlete on a high school team. Its okay to get publicity, explains Bruce. But winning games is the most important thing. For example, in the first Judge game I think I scored eight points. But we won. I didnt feel badly about scoring that many points because we earned a big victory. I almost hope teams sag in on me because if they do that, then the rest of our guys are free and they can score easily. There are other aspects than just coping with the pressure of publicity. Being only a junior, Bruce is sometimes expected to perform great every game and sometimes inexperience catches up with him. I try not to think of myself as a junior and I just to perform as a team member, comments Bruce. try JIUIC UUI ITUIMtrni DeiTIl Clinched Tie for State Tournament Prep Leaders Region ONe win an individual first place was identical to last years.. was Bountiftif's Dave White Cottonwood, a fifth place who defended his breaststroke, inusher last year, finished title but missed breaking the fourth, while Cyprus, fourth record he set last year by last year, finished fifth. s of a second.
