| Show 7 WEBER stake CONFER conference ENOE the quarterly conference of the weber stake was held in the taber nacie ogden city on saturday and sunday april and 1879 saturday at ten en am a goodly number of saints assembled on the stand of the council of the T relve elders eiders 0 C rich and F di D richards the tho presidency of the stake jhb the bishops and other members of the priesthood from all the wards in the county were represented except bishop P G taylor who we regret to say was wab confined to his bed with serious illness he ap ws represented by his after sin bin singing gin g and prayer reports of the various wards were veto given which continued until noon at 2 p m the meeting again convened and after the usual exercises the reports were concluded which showed the saints throughout the stake to be bein lin good condi condl and E standing they were increasing in good works meetings were well attended attend eds tithing was waa better paid than formerly temple onn off offerings ff freely vely rely given and fast day donations were sufficient to provide vi ade for the necessities of the poor in all the wards of the stake the th remainder of the thel afternoon was occupied by apostles rich and richards who gave much valuable practical instruction upon the duties of the saint encouraging them to renewed exertions to keep the commandments of god after singing gaull and benediction by elder farr meeting adjourned till HII IQ 10 oclo bk sunday morning sunday morning between 9 and 10 welock this am the wind blew fiercely from thie the west and northwest followed follow ed by a brief hailstorm which was succeeded by a heavy snowfall which continued d nearly the balance of the day nevertheless by the appointed time tho the tabernacle was well filled after singing and prayer supt bupt R ballantyne reported the condition of the sabbath schools in the stake which be he said were in in better condition and making far better progress than was known inthe in the county the work of instructing the young oung noung in the principles of the gospel was being prosecuted most vigorously and the and teachers ii were iati lati laboring oring with devolve upon elder L F koncir then reported the day schools iu in weber county which he baid said vero were also in inn ina R thriving condition he never before saw baw so much ln interest terest educate our young men and young women for these important duties ho referred to the institutions and the facilities enjoyed for this purpose so by the people of other churchea churche church eq urged the necessity of strong and immediate efforts being made by all who are interested in this matter to furnish better facilities than we now have forthe education of our young elder P F D RICHARDS said at our quarterly conference wasa was a good time to bring to the notice of the saints many things which are for their best beat interests he then spoke of the ogdon ogden junction a paper which was wag published by a number of 0 young men printers of thib this city it wag was published for the public good and this v was as a matter which we should al all I 1 consider it was our duty to sustain and su support this journal Jp and not allow it to be superceded super ceded by an outside paper whose influence would be brought to bear against the inte of this people he requested the iki bishops bli hops to give this matter thein their attention and advocate its claims before he people of their respective wards he fie also spoke of the necessity now of it having a trustee in trust in the various counties in the territory he then nominated president flent david divid H peery trustee in trust for the church h property in weber stake carried unanimously ELDER C W PENROSE then addressed the meeting after speaking of the blessings we enjoy of meeting together in peace pence to transact business and receive instruction he referred to the subject sublet of the education of cur children it was important that they should secure nott only a sect secular ilar liar but also a religious education they y should be taught the principle principles s of the gospel goepel that they may grow up in the spirit of this work he would not exclude religion entirely from the day school simply because there thew might be children present whose parents are not of our falth faith he would not try to force our artieres L r of faith on those who do ri not nob ot desire them bub bat dur our people form the great majority of this community and aud their wishes and desires should be consul consulted in this matter as wel well if not in preference to those of the few he was in favor of the school teacher and closing his exercises with appropriate prayer er he was also aiso in favor of introducing into the day schools fo for r th the 0 benefit of the children of the latter day saint bible book of mormon in and doctrine and covenants classes closes but the chi children idren laren of non mormons cormons should not be lae compelled to study those books nd na person could be considered really educated who is ignorant of the bible its history and morality he referred to the permon on the mount ELDER JOSEPH F SMITH expressed himself much pleased with the reports and the remarks by elder penrose in the morning he spoke at M seme some length on the importance of training our children in the our children they would then bo be taught the practical examples of life the words of solo solomon inori would then be true concerning them when they grow up they will not depart from it we can remember most vividly the tho examples and conduct of our pai pal enta cuts toward us especially those of our mothers let us lead out in the right track invite our children to follow and they will do it it was of great importance li ortance that we make correct early i v impressions on the minda minds of our chil ehll children dien they will not then be easily erased in after years he could not afford lo to allow his children to be taught by those who would into their minds incorrect principles doctrines which are opposed to the doctrines of jesus christ it is folly to suppose that because we are in possession of the tru thour children would not suffer by coming in contact with error until they were old and experienced enough to discern fully between it and truth they should be taught to read and understand the works of the church until they are rooted and grounded in the truth and thoroughly conversant with the principles of thodos the gospel then let them seek knowledge wherever
