Show OR DR J I 1 A 8 SPEECH following Is the lecture delivered by dr J A whitson widtsoe in the tabernacle tuesday evening february IS on industrial education I 1 rejoice ladies ladles and gentlemen that the spirit of the pioneers of this state is still with us As we travel we find this sama spirit all through the state we are proud to see that the same courage the same stability the same perse perseverance veralice of our pioneers Is manifest fest among us today so long as we have this spirit we are ara sate safe absolutely sate safe but if we should drift away from it we face face dangers when we began these farmers institutes I 1 utes several years ago there was a question of what would become of our state there was a crisis ahead our grandfathers and fathers had dug canals built roads and established the foundations of our state stat e but the crisis had corne come things could not be done the same old way new thoughts new methods must take the place of old ways the world had changed the world of 1890 was not the world of 1847 this Is a world of change it must be so progression demands that old customs change tor for new I 1 no 0 man today dares to d dream ream what will happen in the tomorrows this crisis struck all the states or of the union not utah alone but each community had to decide its own questions with us it was not will utah stay but shall we be the makers 0 of utah or shall we let strangers come and make our state state what amt we should want it to be prof merrell merrel I 1 and IMS who went out among the people to try their spirits had bad a splendid test of their feelings from town to town they went out to give them this baua I 1 we malie nia ko inore 0 oe tb lh water soil air and sunshine that is 1 ours 9 and always the answer came we vo will be the ones to make this state vi we a too will say like the pioneers we will make the wilderness blossom as a rose not the withered rose of yesterday but that marvel of beauty tl that at luthur burbank of cal has created that so tar far surpasses its sister roses that you hardly trace tile the relationship that was the spirit of the people and good it was we dont live in yesterdays yesterday s we live in we want to make our more beautiful than any of our yesterdays arid and so these farmers schools ire are bringing a message you cannot afford to ignore now just what is the difference between a common education and an industrial education A common education fits one for an ordinary life art an industrial education is meant to supply all needs for a professional life and tor for the industries industries dont misunderstand me I 1 have no q quarrel darrel with common school in work ork the educational system of today is hopeful trying hard to lift up hopes of tomorrow but our pedagogues gues have forgotten that education is subject to change it Is not a divine law that reading and ivri writing ting be taught in all t the he grades ot of school they seem to cling to the old way and totally forget the needs of the child let us see how schools came to be history says that or years ago the boy who was to be educated was sent one out as an ap apprent prentic lc ile he lived in the family of the master saw his ways used his tools and was close to him for three or four or more years then a day would come when the master would say 1 I have given you all I 1 know I 1 can do no more tor for you the young man went from city io to city stayed awake saw all he could see on his particular work ile he knew his subject at it home and abroad then he settled down las as a master I 1 believe that was the best kind of an education it was the t truest r u e st but we will never get back to it the results of this sort of teaching was tile the finest kind of workmanship tho the carvings of old days the strength and beauty of all handle handicraft raft will never be equaled wily why then did this beautiful plan it if education ile die men became selfish full of greed they said wo must make these skill shill continued on page eTwo two go DB SPEECH continued from page ed workers yield us more work woric we must have beautiful temples and trappings and so the kings and conquers who in their greed of more came to bo be tile the cause of broken apprenticeship the girls too were not kept at school and books until they had no desire to be housekeepers they were bound out to serve to learn the malt mak ili ns of a home to bo know the manag ing of 0 a household but a lay day came when heso kings gs and conquerors were not satisfied they said money money moncy money for temples and sanctuaries and palaces we e must have more workmen with I 1 quicker teaching then they the argued wo we have our monks and priests lot let them take ta ke these young maids to train they have nothing to doand so these men and we women men shut away from life locked up from human 1 1 asso association cia tion lar far front from the sun suii I 1 shino and nature were given these precious children to train in their dark cells and cloisters without one touch of human sympathy to work from oh it was a shame shaine they taught unreal things ideal conditions dreams and fairyland not real life and for years we have been kieen trying to come back to the old story we say clouds and stars alone learn a little about the dirt and air and growing things at our feet now listen boys heres a statement that may scare you but tour four out of every men who are breadwinners today are arc professional men it is as 96 is to 4 that you will not be of the 4 professionals but of the 96 unprofessional men then take the really successful professional men and you might be 1 out of loo it I 1 were a boy id think twice before id take a chance on the 4 if I 1 could find something as good in the 96 the first great reason why we want industrial education to go out among our people girls 75 of each of you must get married so our statistics tell us for generations back our fathers and brothers have demanded that 75 out of every girls shall marry and become the home bonie maker the che housewife and she has filled her place with all your superior knowledge I 1 dare say those men were as well fed as tile the men of today possibly can be and tor for generations to conic come ive no doubt but that tile the young men will insist on 75 of you getting married you dont want to bs be one of oe the forlorn 25 do you how many times alave ilave have your teach ors ars taught you something directly useful to you as future homo home makers you see the majority of men and women must be industrial and not professional people now kow another reason why we want you to be industrial workers there was a time when a farmer was v a a hayseed a a lod hopper when you could see sec the lucern straw sticking in gin i in his hair and he be thought of nothing but hard work there was a time when this same farmers mind was dull thick slavish truly the man with the hoe was a slave indeed half man half beast there was vas a time when the shoemaker mended his old shoes dull lifeless slavish knowing nothing but work work there was a timo time when the blacksmith did its his work to in a mechanical slavish way there was a time when tile the housewife to try fry a beefsteak beef beet steak put it on a hot pan turned it and served it A fine juicy steak but she did not actually know why she did this thing I 1 say there was such a time dut but it Is no more science has grown and developed and now she has arrived into the art of education take the shoemaker why the knowledge of leather would take a college course the tanning the softening the polishing to know it all one must spend time thue and study it ile he would find the subject fascinating take bread making how bow heat beat and moisture produces or foster the tiny living organism and you have a veritable fairy story to study the reason then we say men and women must get back to industrial knowledge is simply that they may thru a perfect knowledge of their la bor have the same joy in their work as does a lawyer or doctor A lawyer says mine aline Is a glorious work no calling could be nobler here Is a problem I 1 must solve it I 1 must justly settle difficulties very good but let roe me tell you a farmer will wil I 1 bo be just as great and have some ot of the same joy if he knows how to outwit out wit a codlin moth then again a doctor gets joy from his work not from the money lie he makes A man who works for money as the end of lito life is rarely successful the doctor then Is not happy in the iho money he earns but in the t that thru his skill and thoughtfulness healing healine comes I 1 that by its his delicate touch fine sympathy and perfect know knowledge fedge lie he can i master ft a great operation A blacksmith can have some of this joy ile he studies iron knows the effect ot of heat and cold ile he too Is a great mastermind master mind the only difference perhaps is the one is working in iron and it matter so much it if he spoil a piece or two while the physician must nove never spoil another great reason why wo we want ali estrial work Is because we wa want the he farmer to enjoy his work as well as a doctor does his work there ne are n e only four our things a farmer needs to 0 know that is water eollo sun alne and air it if he knows these 1 well lie he must succeed again we all want to make money there is a notion that a professional fess ional man m makes akes it is a wealthy man in tact fact I 1 have taken the trouble to find out the average earnings of a professional man and find that 1800 is about his yearly income now ren remember ember out of that he must pay rent rant pay for his living expenses kofl office ice supplies books and instruments etc that leaves him a small margain for banking A farmers yearly income it if he Is reasonably thrifty will come this high or if not it will be lacking a very few dollars another great reason for our message god did not mean for men and women to be house animals ile ho did not mean for us to be penned up shut away from the life giving sunshine man alan has never done his best work in the dark he cannot have inspiration packed away in musty dark corners the churches have not given us their best that is I 1 mean when they have made us worship in dark cathedrals or cloisters jesus of Naz nazereth erath taught in the open you dont hear of him in gloom and darkness or high vaulted temples ile he taught out in the tha open among the blooming flowers and singing birds where ile he could hear and feel nature near him germany and england have little provinces governed by industrial laws that are splendid examples of what can be done don c with a small spot of ground used intelligently once a year every man and woman Is compelled compell cd to go to school for a short time and tako take lessons on how best to get the most out of their work the result Is that it Is surprising the wealth that comes from these scraps of forbidding earth now in our schools wa are taught a subject called nature work but what teaching tile the poor old schoolmarm must teach tile the subject although she does docs not know very much about it but she spends night after night gazing at the heavens to locate sonie some certain star and then looses good brain tissue trying to tell her scholars about it I 1 now it if she would trot out the good old family cow and give a lesson on her site she would find something to in tei est loth herself baud and tb the children and just think how bow their hearts would warm up against each other then geology why they teach of 0 the animals of south africa or the MO monster lister serpents that swallow men im sure I 1 dont know where the beasts home is but this they teach and not one word of their own home surroundings this new education then pleads that educators may see the needs of tile the child and fit his instruction to make him fully capable to meet life as he ha finds it not to burden his brain wit with useless matter that never does anybody much good this world will not grow by the development of surgery or in fact by the professions it must be thru her industrial workers vor wor kere elbert elbart hubbard tells a pretty story A nian man and woman lived and planned and worked and worked and planned and lived like lie all common people till their end came and they died they were taken to paradise but they found that they had been in paradise ill all their days that 1 is i I S life to love your work and do it nobly down south we have a little town whose resources sire ara about as good as brigham and we wa are trying to teach people to use their material right we are arc preaching brigham DrIg barn as a model dal and anait it does us good to meet you good people and to see your interest we havo have one of your townsmen on our board pros pres lorenzo NT stohl and we are proud of him we know he is capable mid and will ianke our school ono one of the greatest of its kind in the country I 1 thank you for your attention at the close of D dr 1 lecture 0 e john P christensen introduced the tha following resolution which was carried resolved that it be tho the wish oi of the farmers and taxpayers of this community that agriculture and domestic science be tausha tau ait in the 1 public schools |
