| Show THE PORTLAND POMO i MAINE TELEGRAM the following appeared in the I 1 land me 1 telegram in of feb nil a copy of which was sent ous 0 w by elder lester L hanschu one of the party 28 missionaries or 01 MORMONS HERE ON WAY ABROAD A party ot of 28 nearly till of them young men arrived arrival in portland from salt lake city utah last friday afternoon and went at once to smiths I 1 hotel where there rooms were in readiness for them the names of ct the party are arc given here 11 1 L steed mrs IT II L steed M mrs irs grace iiames homes M C shepherd J E works T 11 chambers A merz vincent lawson ray tuff R Il ernsby james 0 petersen Pc L chansen LH ansen le ariard petersen Ps lafayette hatch ivor goodmansen Good ursen george stanger 1 I G hendricksen ia E W V carbine joseph M ogden W D watterson joseph kunz A adner G 11 II monson J if berg joseph A card C A woolley with the exception of mrs grace homes all of the abe persons named above are missionaries sent out under the auspices of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints an organization with headquarters in salt lake city mrs airs homes is on her way home to england from a visit to this coun country iry the party left salt lake city on january making brief stops in chicago boston duffalo buffalo and niagara magara where they visited the falls with mr steed who has charge of the party the writer had a small conversation we e had a pleasant trip from salt lake city to portland ho he said except we nye encountered a regular blizzard between buffalo and niagara which delayed our train nearly ten hours the wind blew a hurricane pilled the snow which was falling high on the tracks so that the cars could advance only a few rods it at a time and then the would again get busy but it was warm in fit the cars car and we had plenty of eatables so EO we webe v ere very comfortable how long has the association in salt lake city been sending gut cut missionaries sion aries narles the worl was begun on a small scale over 60 years ago but in recent years the society has been sending a company of missionaries every month across the ocean to labor in ill the barlou i countries of europe the number of these companies vary from 25 to 50 the most of thesa missionaries are young men who have just qualified themselves for the work our party will sail on th tb steamship canada of the dominion line saturday afternoon on arriving in g liverpool we shall separate somo some remaining in england some going to germany some to france and others to sweden norway and denmark mrs steed and myself are going to cape colony south africa where I 1 shall take charge of that part of our mission which is located there I 1 expect to be gone from this country 3 years and the others of the party will be absent from two tio to three years these missionary parties always used to sail from new york until it was learned from experience that better accommodations can be had by the portland route how are business conditions in salt lake city very good indeed of course some effects of the panic of last fall were felt in the larger places in ill our state but as more than an offset utah raised last year one of the largest and best crops in her history and this is also true of nearly all of the other great western states |
