Show MASSACRE OF THE ime SLAUGHTER AT ROCK SPRINGS DESCRIBED BY A MAN EMPLOYED THERE the fol foi following lowing account of the rock springs massacre was written by a resident of this city employed e aloyed in the mines at rock springs to to his wife who has courteously allowed us to publish it the first part of the letter is dated september septembers 2 we haye have had quite an exciting time since bince jooa today to day in rock springs and still the scene is quite lively as I 1 am m writing at p in when we went to din dinner r today to day at noon we saw a crowd va gathered tiered wo we enquired the cause and were told the Chiu chin amen must go this morning a disturbance arose in mine no 6 between a chinaman and a white man it laj las reported that the chinaman first struck him with a drill and then drove alpren in his back from that the ball call was started which for some time has been all ready I 1 think it was THE INTENTION OF THE WHITE MINERS to wait till 6 this evening to open the fire but they got ot word enat troops were ivere sent for by t the authorities so they they began about 2 chinatown is 13 some little distance from the main town and said to contain about GOO or inhabitants that is it did this morning I 1 was working g at no 4 about a hail hall mil mill from chinatown and three fourths of amlie a mile amile from the board boarding ing hou seand was called to see the sight when I 1 f got ot to the front of the building where 1 could see the mountain slope elope south of town was spotted with RUNNING FOR LIFE and guns puns popping sharp and quick after awhile the town was on fire and hasteen has been burning ever since when we came from supper there were three houses left in chinatown and they are burning now nosy dead are lying in different directions and some are on the ground mortally wounded we saw one dead in a dugout another had bad rolled down the bank into bitter creek another lying a few feet from the road as we came to our shanty he was shot through the neck but not vet dead but we could do nothing for him I 1 dont know how hov many were shot in their houses bouses and burned up but a great many no doubt the children and citizens are PACKING G OFF CHICKENS PIGS rigs AND ANYTHING THEY CAN FIND we met one little boy dragging a pig ile he said he was not going to fight all ill dayed dy aud and get nothing for it I 1 think troops will be here by 12 10 tonight to night but it is too late to do much good I 1 think there will be some arrests made which may make more trouble I 1 will wait watt and see what the night brines forehand fort hand then I 1 may mav may mav write more I 1 think the affray will make quite a change in things here for a while thursday morning arning september 3rd ard all quiet rock springs still intact but no chinatown only one house bouse left the chinaman that we saw that was wag wounded and still alive last night is dead this mornine morning morn ine lne I 1 don doa dont doat t know what will be done NO TROOPS HAVE COME YET it is reported that nobody would run the trains orders were sent both ways for them not to be allowed to pass I 1 will write again soon boon and will try to get this on the train this morning dont know kno w whether cewill we will work today or not I 1 dont think it will stop the carpenter work camwell I 1 am well weil dont think we ae are la any danger from the mob the saloons were all closed yesterday yer yeM erday at 10 am none were drunk but things have a sad look this morning I 1 |
