Show Which Country Churchyard Was Grays Elegy Written In? Ey Tory Evans Associated Press Writer LONDON For two centuries, admirers of Thomas Gray for h.s Elegy Written In a Country Churchyard have been paying homage at a churchyard in S"ke Poges where he lived. On Friday, the 20Cth anniversary of the poets death, came a suggestion that they have been going the wrong place. The literary weekly Spectator said Gray's elegy actually was conceived in St. Peters two Burnham, Churchyard, miles away. Both places are about 20 miles west of London. Writes Before 1748 As the bell in the church tower tolled 8 p.m., the hour known at Eton as the curfew, the poet started the train of thought that led to the immortal opening line: The curfew tolls the knell of parting day. The poem could not have been written after 1iJ9, because it was in March that year that Gray and Horace Walpole set out for the tour of Europe that ended in a quarrel in Reggio, Italy, in 1740. When Gray sent the final version cf the elegy to Walpole in 1750, he wrote him a leter saying: I have been thing, whose beginning ycj have seen long ago, I immediately send it to you. You will look upon It In the light of a thing with an end to it. Vatson-Smyth- 's is belief that the List sentence refers to Gray's homosexual love for Walpole, about which the elegy hinges, but that Walpole, not understanding, showed the poem arounu so much that Gray had to publish it, much against his wishes. onlyl Como is end bo pisosantly sur, M OUR REGULAR 2.49 ' OUR REG. 99 golf Quality Ram balls, long distance, cat resistant.
