Although known for centu-rt3hypnotism really just became popular with the past decade or so. Highly controversial, hypnotism now is Used not only by entertainers but by some dentists, general and psychia-- ' practitioners s, trists. No one can explain hypnotism completely. Scientists believe it is a natural part of human behavior. There is no magic process or formula associated with it, and the hypnotist has no special powers. But, like a potent drug, it should be used only by a qualified person. In the hands of unqualified or untrained individuals, hypnotism is considered dangerous. . Dr. Donald E. Lindsay, a Salt Lake City area clinical hypnotist, explains that hypnotism can be used for any number of psychological dis-- , turbances, such os phobias, anxiety and depression; psy-- . ehosomatic conditions like asthma, allergies, menstrual difficulties, ulcers, spastic colitis, and for breaking a varie-- . .ty of habits smoking, drinking, nail biting, obesity. , . Three Levels Dr. Lindsay perceives the mind as working in three levels, or like three concentric circles, each one larger than the proceeding one. The first and smallest level Dr. (or circle), Lindsay explained, is the conscious, the now. Surrounding the conscious is a larger level, the unconscious, which is the ac-- , cessible memory. The largest lerel, and that which surrounds the unconscious, is the subconscious. This, he added, is everything a person has ever experienced. It is both memory and emotion. y Ordinarily, there is communication between the conscious and unconscious. However, there usually is only y passage into the two-wa- one-wa- ' subconscious. Control Function us have been a lot of negative Dr. experiences, Lindsay All of through - continued. And one function of the subconscious is to moni- tor and to a great extent control the mechanical activities of the body, such as dielimination, .respiration, gestion. - But if the subconscious is cluttered with too many negative experiences, be they 4rge or small, it either becomes distracted or chooses to express itself by throwing something out of whack." And thfcse distractions may be expressed in psychosomatic conditions, which Dr. Lindsay de- fined as physical manifestatentions cf psychological sions; or psychological disturbances. While some of these negative experiences are repressed by the individual, others just sink down by the weight of years, he went on, but, nevertheless, they are still there and as alive as if this they just happened morning. Commonest Cause The source, unsurprisingly, of most negative experiences is the individuals family brothers, sisters, parents, Plus there are some spouse. isolated single experiences, such as a particularly bad teacher, accident, asault, etc., Which are negative, he added. The qualified hypnotist, by Unveiling the patients subconscious, can explain the relationships with different family members.
