the I 1 general superintendent george Q cannon canton bre presided sided this was the most largely attended meeting that the union nas has ever held the immense building with its galleries gallerie s being tilled filled on or near nean the stand were presidents G Q cannon and mid YV woodruff apostles E snow and V F D richards beneral officers of the union presidents and sunday school superintendents of stakes also many other leading men of the different different organizations of the church the musical attractions of the evening were th the Q brass banu band and the logan choir under the leadership of brother alexander lewis theo the opening ening exercises we were re music by the bani bans band lloyed followed fo by an anai anal anthem ithem rendered by the choir and prayer by stake superintendent wliilam william bax sister Ai Cowley and brother E ull uit lilluet luet entitled god bless dur 0 ur mou mountain britain home 11 with chorus by the choir the roll of stakes was called showing that representatives of the stake S S organizations were present from nearly all the twenty nine stakes of zion elder elden george reynolds th thelby enby re ques quest tread a comprehensive historical review of the union prepared by a t I 1 t ommittee appold appointed t ed f for that purpose it was listened to with deep interest the next exercise was a glee by the choir I 1 GEN burt GEO Q cannon CA remarked that he had heard with delight ilg lit the favorable repot report just realand rea dand I 1 n kajing saying this he felt sure he but uttered the sentiments of all who listened ned to it ile he regretted that brother goddard could not be present in justice to his own feelings as aswell well weli as to the roth yoth of his co in this work lie ile felt to pay a high tribute of praise to brother goddard and to brother willes 1 nov now absent on foreign missions to the late samuel L levans evans and to stake sunday school schoot litan dents and other officers and rs of our sunday schools for their earnest und untiring labors in this cause the growth and alyd progress of the union wasa matter of wonder and congratulation when we consider the importance to which it had attained and tiie the great amount of good it had accomplished with the expenditure of so little means the present large meeting and other striking evidences show tile the rapid growth and increasing interest felt inthis in this movement the plan of having all the children visited on oa a sunday morning and invited to attend sunday school by visitors appointed to this duty had resulted in A marked increase in atten attendance attendant dan ce of man many y of the se schools bools it is the duty of all the saints to use their utmost endeavors to promote the effle efficiency lency of our sunda sunday schools and parents should uphold their efforts by careful t training ining atheme and by setting goott examples he invoked v ok blessings S en all ali engaged in this work musie music by the band APOSTLE ERASTUS SNOW felt an especial leasure pleasure in festl testifying ing to the good results results of the effii efforts of 11 the sunday school union and of the officers and teachers eng engaged aged in this work throughout the stakes Stake sot of zion dional al not specially enraged engaged in the sabbath school work he had ad striven in a general way to aid and promote its cause the deep interest he took in it made him rejoice in the success that has attended its progress As a means ot of restraining dud aud guiding the youth of zion the value of its influence could primaries and d jhb the improvement pro associations by encourage r ing their children to attend atten attendant dand and by every other means in their power the labors labois and responsibilities g young thought that sunday school wor work khas kwas was of so much importance that he discontinued the sunday morning meetings so that our sunday schools might be better supplied suD bud plied piled with teachers inglat an and ana not interfered with iirth the speaker felt to suggest that all our oar sunday schools be held in the In orning morning and at the hour best suited to childrens welfare ile he recommended regular meetings ings of the sunday school officers and teachers of each stake also that the off meers officers and teachers of each school meet to together ether once a month that thad secular books books be ba excluded from our sunday schools as class books book our union and church publications rendering thel their ruse use no longer ik a necessity also the organization of theological classes in tiie the sunday schools to be held on a sunday morning or oil on some evening during the tae week ile he referred to the brass band as a pleasing feature connected with the union v it was hias announced that at the monthly meeting of bf sunday school superintendents and teachers to be held heid gli bli on the llast first monday in november the thirteenth ward sunday school would furnish singing and doorkeepers and brother karf karl G maeser would dellver deliver a chor hort lecture on the besl bess f n da day dar school 1 general superintendent cannon made some i teachers should not be taken to act as home missionaries lie ile hoped that presidents of stakes would be actuated by the same spirit that president young r was and not permit any me meetings betings or gathe rinzs of less importance than gatherings take stake conferences to be appointed on orl the sabbath so as to interfere with the sunday ay schools either in their attend attendance or the usual times of holding them other hours or days could be appointed for any other meetings or business except the stake conferences this Is the express wish ot of the first presidency who had urged it before ile he endorsed the suggestion of assistant general superintendent INI morgan organ that all our sunday schools so far as practicable be held about 10 of a sabbath morning these things were not new but they were of creat great importance ile he expressed his thanks to brother lewis ana anci the logan choir for their heir presence and at his suggestion the he congregation manifested their appreciation recia tion of the pleasure the singing lad iad afforded them by a unanimous vote of thanks meeting closed with an anthem ant hemby by the choir and benediction by apostle F D richards |
