feet and width 85 fet fe t an addition of X 3 feet is in progress snaking making maling ane extreme width P ido 10 feel feet tile tiie machine room is loo f t x 50 f t the engine room 60 x au ft tile the rotary boiler room loom 25 x 60 M ft and a nd the extension for chemical an and d straw cutting loom so lwft amtower A tower forthe for tor the elevator is lou loo feet high and its dimensions teet Theet the evator elevator has a lifting capacity of pounds I 1 tile tiie nee uri smokestack smoke stack is 75 feet high the upper story of the b ball bali dilding dingis Is used for tue the sorting of material below is the engine room Sand the basement contains the drat dral drainers ners and agitators and has a number of substantial arches for lof the support ot of the rooms room above containing ta ining luing heavy machinery the water which comes down here upon the turbine wheels is brought by a race 1300 1500 feet long iong which can convey tho the whole creek and is carried through an iron penstock 50 inches in diameter with a fall of 49 leet feet there are three turbine wheels measuring respectively M cwi 20 and 13 S inches encased in an iron lion I 1 wheel pit the tiie rags and waste paper which is also worked worked over this Is done by girls on the second floor the mate material rial d ferent different if grades for different kinds of stock then goes into cutting and dusting I 1 machines on the same floor it Is then put with lime and soda ashes into imi immense llense rotary lotary boilers below one of which is 1 2 feet and another feet and holding respectively four tons and two tons of rag material next it goes to the washing engines which are si 91 six 91 in number four of 40 horse power each and two of 25 2 horse power each here the stock is bleached as well as washed chloride of lime being used former purpose eyed into tie lle tle drainers in the basement which are brick receptacles eighton eight in number each 8 x 11 14 x 10 feet with false bottoms after being drained the material half stuff is taken by the elevator in carts to the engine room and mixed according to the desired bality quality of paper then reground in heating ea ting engines and taken down into the basement again but this time into the agitators immense vats thence up stairs again to pass through the jordan engine which cuts it tip up into smaller consistency and makes it even cv en texture then down it goes into the basement again into luto another agitator where it becomes so fine that it is pumped up like water to the machine room where it flows into the great machines at one end ill in liquid form and comes out at the other ill in cut of solid paper there are arc two machine machines s operated one tile the old machine used m it the sur sugar a house mili mill for several years welch which now turns out coarse wrapping paper made from straw pulp the other is a splendid machine made by smith winchester co south windham Wind hamo hamm connecticut ItI it is nearly nearis feet in it length is of fine tine finish and of the latest an and most improved ed pattern the I 1 liquid pulp flow over an endless I 1 wire screen sereen through which the water falls leavin leaving a sort of scum which passing over suction boxes worked by I 1 pumps is N deprived of more moie water at each cacti box until it assum assumes ena esa a consistency which enables it to pa pan pas s onto felt blankets over press rollers and dryers heated b bv steam and bo soon on to revolving ca lenders which smooth the surface of the paper and it then rolls out of the engine cut in sheets which arc received by girls or boys and laid level to be passed on to the finisher and counted folded and tied up iu reams and bundles for shipment it takes about half a minute for the liquid pulp to pass through this long iong ana and and complicated machine and come como out tic as perfect paper it moves like clockwork lock clock 0 work and acts like ullam magic le straw is used for the manufacture of coarse wrapping wrap ping plug paper buu bue rags for news newsprint print book and inan manilla llla papers all the fluer grades being turned out by the new machine 8 straw tr a w is first fed into a cutting machine which chops it up and conveys aitto it to be placed in the rotary boilers from froin which it goes through much the same process as that described it is expected that arrangements range ments will be made to use wood pulp as utilized in the east some new caie cate ca tenders riders are expected soon to arrive when the first qualities of book anh ana and aud cover papers will DO manufactured the tile mill enill now employs twenty four hands including mr john Bonn erthe foreman who is from middletown ohio and is familiar with all depart i ments of the work when ahen it can be run to its full capac capacity itz it will employ afif nifty fifty ty regular hands this does not I 1 include n clu ciu de incidental wor workmen kinen such as rag gatherers and haulers of rags straw coal and paper who are quite numerous mr charles john lambert who used to run the od old mill successfully and had charge of the present mill until mr bonners longer experience was s secured is now nov in charge of the ninish lenish ing ipg department the tiie producing capacity of the mill averages thirty tons of paper per week or live rive tons a day tho the daily dally lall lali y expense is about tho iHO OThe cost of the building and machinery including the addition in progress is about 1 l i OOOO all the work is substantial and thoro thorough ull uli the plans platis were made by mr lie lle henry liry grow who superintended super intended the tho building while the mason work was managed by mr joseph D dover doven 0 v e r great
