Show ATTEMPT TO EX PEL ELDERS FROM erom LAWRENCE LAVRENCE CO TENNESSEE almi lM hwi i VENUS lawrence go tenn monday june 1884 editor previous lous lons to our conference held may slay ath we met with very little opposition sit lon ion although a few threats were made us immediately after conference while president J J fuller and elders J A ross boss and T H Robbins bobbins were on their way wa to Lawrenc lawrenceburg eburg where president B roberts expected to deliver a lecture they were confronted by a man who had been very friendly to the elders and with whom we have frequently qu antly stopped and were most V shamefully ABUSED q he then threatened to kill them and told them never to pass by his house again since that time president J J fuller has been notified twice by letter to gather up his little flock and leave this county but as we thought the greater part of it was wind and only calculated la t ed to scare we concluded to remain where we are and continue to greach preach ear ean the gospel to all that choose to another little circumstance occurred yesterday which was aiso ulso intended to scare us from the county we were holding meeting in the shade of soffie some trees As most houses house S are closed against us two benwell men well weli dressed ARMED WITH HICKORY CLUBS about D 1 inches in diameter and about two feet long iong although in our eyes they were greatly magnified probably owing to the fact that we knew they were cut for our heads came up and took seats presently three more of the same sort armed in in like manner came calne from the the opposite direction abw and sat down be behind hindus us we paid little attention to them but kept kent on speaking upon the first principles of the gospel as soon goon as meeting in was as dismissed the the so they proved came forward and ordered the congregation to leave as aa they had something to say to those mor mons one of them came forward and said these mormons cormons have been twice notified to leave this county and they have paid no attention to it they are arc also preaching false doctrine doctrines that were got up by joe hand doctrines tr that are contrary to the laws of the U US S and now they calculated to preach to the mormons cormons Mor mons 11 we told them if they had any thing to sayto bayto say to us we would be pleased to hear it and answer any objections they might make also that we held ours ourselves etves subject to the laws of the land our chances for a whipping looked very favorable and only for tor the inter ference of our friends four men their wives and two boys we gouid would no doubt have been badly beaten but god the maker and preserver of all raised up unto us in the hour of need friends who BOLDLY DEFENDED US and the principles we teach although they have not as yet embraced them the ladies were loud in their eions against the mob some of them even threatening to scald them if they should come about their houses bouses hunting for mormon elders the mob brought a great many railing and abusive against our people none of which they could substantiate when we pinned them down and called for their proofs our friends saw that we were in a critical position and they though few determined to defend us if it cost them their lives and etwas it was with much di and persuasion that we prevented them from 9 DOING VIOLENCE TO THE MOB never did we hear a man or a set of man men get such a tongue lashing as that mob got from both men and women the mob then held a consultation and returned a verdict that we must leave the county before 10 am toe morrow alunday A monday londay and if we failed to comply with this last request they would hunt us up up and we would get some rough handling we now are ON BORROWED TIME f being still in the county and have not yet made up our minds to leave we will conclude by adding that we ire are of the opinion that this wi silt result in much good it will excite the sympathy of a great many people who rave eave have not as yet become in our behalf and it will be the means of raising up many good friends to the tie sie elders eiders iders in thi this spart part of the country J 7 A J N J A ross boss |
