Show OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS garland globe editor globe globa we have sent you a few articles for your paper from different places where we have been when the fever to write happened to strike all and d in knocking about and front from observation and inquiry have learned a few facts that we have tried to mention in such a manner as to be easily understood der stood these suggestions have chiefly been long along 0 financial lines there are other questions ot of equal importance to any community and for that reason should not be overlooked nor passed by with any degree 0 of indifference n the people of the united states are proud of their children and justly so particularly Particular la Js this the case with those who are engaged in build ins in up lip the state of utah when eople are seeking a place in which to make their homos homes and after finding where there are lands and water and other conditions existing tor for male mak ing a livelihood one of 0 the first questions if the country is settled to lie be asked is what kind ot of schools blye have you the fact that among the 45 states stales in the union and from an all educational cat ional view point utah holds third place that at the st louis exposi tion lion the schools of utah were awai awarded d a gold old and silver medal and at the portland fair were given two gold medals speaks well tor for tile the educational attainments of the state young ladies and young gentlemen come from surrounding states to attend our institutions of learning we e have hare in tile the schools of this state professors that have graduated from and have taught in the best schools of the nation all this goes to show the awakening interest taken in the schools hy by the people generally and by those in charge particularly the main question comes nearer home are the schools of boxy box elder eider county keeping pace with those hose of the state although we know we have good schools we would hardly be willing to give an air affirmative Irma tive answer to the question though we do believe generally speaking they can be placed in tile the front ranks parents have much more responsibility for the maintaining of good schools resting upon them than they themselves are willing to admit some years ago a gentlemen of con sid erable scholarly attainment lived in brigham city he delighted in theatres theartres the atres concerts lectures musical entertain entertainments iren ts and anything which tended to elevate the intellectual aties ot of the people ile he was deeply interested interested in schools and being a trustee for years his efforts c were put forth tor for the betterment of the minds and morals of that town and the impress of his labors are yet to le de seen and refuse to be obliterated as tile the prints in the rocks by the ses na shore are left aber the ebb and the oceans tide the efforts of others can be made as lasting but all does not go smoothly in a county bounty like box elder it is but a short time since many of the districts received no tax front from corporations even now some get combar little and one gets gels none sorce some districts by levying a one mill tax lax can hire high priced teachers and can run their schools a whole year while others are burdened with school tax hare to put up with medium educators educators and their schools continue only part or of the year in a free country like ours it is not fair fail that one mans child should have so BO much advantage over that of his neighbor then there are droves of sheep and cattle on which no school taxes are collected tor for the reason that and each child would v get gel its his shale shaie are nor where they belong much inch of this unpleasantness would be obviated it if all the districts were made into one I 1 know that I 1 am now nov treading on en some come peoples corns but we all have a light to our opinions ons and to express our convictions there are now seventy two trustees who have the management of tile the schools of the county it would be much easier caster to select three or live five competent persons tor for that purpose than to find so eo many the smaller cumber could be paid at a less expense but sufficient to warrant their spending most of their time in tile the school work as necessity might require the same as other officers the school taxes would then be uniform and each child would get his sabre much aluch I 1 of the good work and success of 0 county schools depend ou on the superintendent erin crin during file I 1 ho ten voik ing months he will need he be busy visiting his hia schools talking to and with the parents holding teachers meetings and institutes aiding the trustees always having a suggestion a word or of adice and encouragement or a little pepper if necessary to give to the teachers there is nothing thin quite so discouraging to a young teacher as to bo be engaged in a country school where the school element is not the most appreciative and where tile the matter of 0 discipline is a puzzling question ind and go week acel after week to teach and at al 1 the same time hold in check those restless and impe impulsive s ve americans in embryo how she feels the need of a word of advice and of encouragement she feels fe e I 1 s to fly to the school superintendent for aid as site she would go to a parent tor for a advice in other troubles the farmer that takes no more interest in his farm stock and machinery than some parents take in the schooling of their children or know no more about the needs of his farm and stock titan some superintendents and trustees do of the requirements of school work would soon find lie he need mortgage his farm to provide necessities tor for his family I 1 would not for a moment disparage those 1 par ar crits teachers and re who arc ai 3 so earnest and energetic and there are legions of them but there ire arc evils existing that should be overcome by those who have tile the care of future citizens of our great state keltha jan 23 1907 |
