Show WITH THE legislature the college university fight is now on in ill earnest senator eullen has introduced in the senate bills prescribing the courses to be offered by the two schools and providing for a special tax tor for their maintenance senator park has introduced in the senate a bill known as the university dill bill we append hereto a synopsis or text of the two bills for comparison the university bill the text of tile the university bill is as is follows section I 1 that section 2292 of oe tile the revised statutes of utah 1898 as amended by chapter laws of utah 1905 lie and the same is hereby amended to read as follows section 2292 the university shall be the highest branch of the system tem of public education As far as possible its courses and methods shall be arranged to supplement the instruction of the subordinate branches of such system with a view to afford a thorough education to students of both sexes in fix the arts the sciences ericc i literature law medicine and tile the civil professions including clil mechanical electrical chemical and mining engineering but the university must not include in its courses agricultural domestic science and arts except as Is or may be prescribed in fit the normal course irrigation engineering or commerce and except in the normal course shall give no instruction below college grade section 2 that for the purpose of viding a permanent revenue for the support of tile the university of utah there is hereby levied for the year 1007 1907 and tor for each year thereafter perpetually an ad val valorem tax ol of three fourths of one mill on each dollar in value of the taxable property of the state slate section 3 that the state stale auditor shall on the fifth day of 01 each month draw a mariant wan ant in favor of the lie treasurer of said university for such part of said tax as shall have been paid into the state stale treasurer ier during dining tile the month preceding pie ceding section 4 that the cost of maintaining the said aid university in all its departments including the branch normal and buildings and equipment shall not in any year exceed the leve nue received from the said tax together with the revenue derived from the land grants and tile the miscellaneous revenues at the said university text of college bill the text or of the college bill is is as follows section I 1 that section of the revised statutes of utah be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows the agricultural college of utah shall offer courses of instruction leading to degrees in ill domestic science and art irrig irrigation aaion engineering gi and commerce with jilg ing in military science and tactics history language and the various branches of I 1 physical I 1 and natural science and mechanic arts with special reference to the liberal and practical education of the courses in liberal arts section 2 that for the purpose of pro providing a permanent revenue for the support of the agricultural college 0 of utah there is 13 hereby levied tor for the year 1907 and for each year thereafter perpetually an ad valorem valoree tax of one halt half of one mill in each dollar in alue of the taxable property in the state section 3 that the state auditor shall on the fifth day of each month draw a warrant in favor of the treas iuar pt of ald aid college foro for such part 0 of said aid ja fax x c arp ID the state treasury during the month next preceding section 4 that the cost of maintaining the said college and including buildings and equipment shall not in any year exceed the revenue derived from the college larid land grant and the federal appropriation and miscellaneous iscel laneous revenues it at the said no college allege section 5 this act shall take tahe effect fact upon its approval |
