Augusyt 11, 1965 i t f - - I Raider Rusher Sports Mirror by Tribune Sports Editor Plan Mac Speedie Tops Curtice In Optimistic Approach : Not many coaches could top Jack Curtice inoptimism, but Mac Speedie did. r Football fang will remember, Curtices pregame pep vw?talk to the Utah squad before the f - s' f 'Jr re- -! Army game iff, 1957, a it I group I galed by telling again'ih, Chicago.- The boys were scared to ideath, he' recalled, so l started to tell them the firstseries of plays' wed use against Army, winding up with George Boss going in to kick the point after touchdown. Utah fumbled the first two 'times Lee 'Grosscup handled the ball, but when we held on to the ball for a series, we scored exactly as I had told the . but-Cacttl- j s boys we would. But Speedie went even better. When Mac was named head coach, the Broncos had an losing string going. But when Denver upset Kansas City in Speedies first game as head coach, Mac appeared in the dressing room, pulled out a typewritten victory speech and delivered it. Asked when hed typed the victory speech, Speedie Last Monday, when I was hired as head coach. 11-ga- A Change for Better In his declining days as head coach of the Broncos, Jack Faulkner was a mixed up man. Practices were disorganized. The coach was displeased with the fan support and reaction to a loser! and the players were in. a disgruntled, con- fused state, as Faulkner juggled manpower from game to game. But every afternoon, Faulkner held secret practices, behind high walls and barred gates. Speedies first decision was to open practice to the public. In pro football, everyone knows your plays. There are no surprises. You win through better execution. So if any spies' want to watch our practice, they can stand on the sidelines, instead of spying from the trees, Speedie announced. The first practice under the new regime drew a couple dozen spectators and after practice, the new coach went around and thanked each fan personally for coming out. Speedie also cut the Denver book from 150 plays to about 2 0 and announced that each player on the squad would know where he stood at all times. Previously, a man might be an end one week, a fullback the next and a halfback the third, and then sit on the bench for the fourth . game. Won for the Skipper The Broncos responded by winning their first game in starts, for Speedie. .12 During Broncos Go the second half, a fan started to chant Go and, file crowd took' it up. Speedie began to direct the cheering, joining the crowd and leading the . yells. Speedie is a great believer in the emotional end of playing and coaching. Players are so nearly equal in size, agility and ability that games are won or lost by the emotional pitch, he contends. So Speedie will bring his first pro team to Salt Lake City Friday noon for the Saturday night game in the Utah stadium, against the Oakland Raiders. And he might just give the fans a little something ' extra on the sidelines, because hes a fighting coach wholl battle anyone if he can wangle a victory by so doing. . ----- , A Miracle Story The story of Denvers amazing season ticket drive (it 22,468 at present with a goal of 25, 000) . has been told several times. The. tickets were, sold at $31.50. for .the sideline seats, , $21 for adults in the end zone and $10.85 for students in the end zone. Tickets averaged out at about $27 each. ThaFs n more than a dollars in the bank six months before the first game. v But publicist Don Smith relates that during the drive one couple appeared and paid cash for their season tickets through the 1969 season, just to be sure of getting seats. last They had purchased their 1965 season-tick- ets winter and when the drive started, they just ) wanted to make sure theyd have good seats for the years to come, Don added. The amazing thing 'about that drive, Smith concluded, was the biggest, single order was for 100 season tickets, so the little guys carried the load. Wouldnt ticket impetus like that be a wonderful surprise for Enid Cosgriff and the Bees? . WASHINGTON (AP) -- .
