should attend to it I 1 corresponded with them received an answer and wrote to them when I 1 would come accordingly I 1 left philadelphia on the loth of february and after a trip of nearly miles in 21 24 hours arri arrived v ed at my destination with the following results I 1 found the family glad to see me and I 1 was treated with much kind ness nes SEVERAL MEETINGS on the following day sunday preached morning and evening t first at the upper and then at the lower lowe r school house and was listened to with much attention we kept up our meetings mee every evening with increased numbers attending one evening after the preaching a united brethren minister came to me and said I 1 had preached a good scriptural doctrine but how about polygamy I 1 informed him that I 1 was not sent to preach polygamy but that I 1 was prepared to defend it assailed he expressed himself much surprised sed that I 1 should believe such a doctrine and denounced it as damnable I 1 asked him if he expected to be saved intha in the kingdom of god he saldie said sald be hoped so I 1 replied I 1 hoped so too I 1 then inell quoted from matthew vill viii ancl 11 christ says and I 1 sa say isil 1111 unto you yoh that many any shall come from the cast and west and shall sit lt down with abraham and isaae isaah and jacob in the ka kingdom g dai dal d of god now sir it said 1 I wont you yon be very much shocked IV with i h these thes polygamists 0 I 1 hia bia mists you will be I 1 in a wit wyt hf company with ile he replied that he lle did not know this raised a great laugh at his expense c and the congregation con re separated ili in good humor ineffectual opposition on friday evening some half dozen fellows of the baser sort determined to stop my preaching and threatened to tar and feather or shoot me aie they went to one of the directors ot til the e school and told him what they intended to do if he did not lock the school house against us ile he fearing that they would put thair threat into execution locked the house one of the farmers seeing this offered his house to hold hoid the meetings in Sowe so we started to his place about one mile away and had a good meeting with about sixty present after af ter this thi we had no trouble to find places for meetings at a meeting we held on the following sunday at a farm house bouse two directors of another school camj cama three miles from the oneie one we last met at requested me to come como and preach at their school house and they would see sec me protected accordingly on monday evening we held meetings and the house was fairly packed when nIhad I 1 had done preaching I 1 asked the directors if it would be agreeable ag that I 1 should preach the next night and all of them answered in the affirmative one of them proposed that a vote be taken which was put and it was unanimous I 1 L would have stayed in the place longer but I 1 had made other a appointments p to fili fill and I 1 had concluded conclude tto to go home on friday so you see that by being turned out of of one place many others were opened up to us you would be surprised at the interest that was manifested wherever I 1 Iwen went tand and with the exception mentioned above I 1 was created all over with the greatest kindness CASES OF HEALING perhaps it would not be out of place to mention an all incident that occurred shortly after my arrival here when I 1 came to the house of thomas sherwood his wife lay sick of a lever unable to be up the next morning after my arrival I 1 felt impressed to go to her bedside and talk to her on the principles of the gospel after af ter talking a little littie while she asked me if I 1 would administer to her after prayer I 1 did so and in less than ten minutes she left her bed healed A child about four four years old a son of one of the brothers sherwood had the croup and was almost choked his throat swollen and he had a high fever I 1 adminis administered tere d to this child and the possession of the j book of mormon and believed it and taught his children that it was true i none of them had ever seen a mormon elder until they saw me and they be came so the truth of the work that they wrote for an elder to come among them they have nearly doubt I 1 enough money to go to zion and I 1 doubt not that before the summer is over yon will find tind them all in utah we are not doing much in philadelphia by byway way of making converts but we are nrc keeping the saints together and trying to gather them up to zion as soon as they have the means may the lord hasten on his work until all things shall bex be accomplished that are spoken of by all his prophets since the world began ir mso president of the philadelphia branch |
